I have 60x45cm canvas prints made from files of my old 5MP Olympus 5050 camera (thats approx. 23 inch x 17 inch). For canvas prints you don't need 240 dpi (or ppi). AFIK 100-150 dpi is enough for canvas prints because of the rough structure of the canvas.
I print this size on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta paper for galleries and they are very well received. I can not imagine that canvas is going to be a problem for you.
M8 enlarge 16 x 20 inches should be no problem at all.
But it also depends on the lens you are using too.
With the modern lens eg. 50mm f1.4 asph the lens resolution is high enough to print 20 x 30 inches easily. While old lens may look softer.
IMHO
I went to school with a fellow using an M8, making prints 24"x36". No problem there -- The CCD renders details better than most CMOS sensors, so a bit of enlargement using Photoshop still retains most details. Mind you, he really tweaked the enlargement, but it looked fantastic.
