I decided today to treat myself to one dream-come-true, and bought my first Leica. It's a Leica IIIc/f conversion, with the Summitar f/2 collapsible lens. I got it from a local camera store which is owned by a man who is also a trained Leica tech.

I am very happy with my new purchase/toy! I've wanted a Lecia for years, and when this one came available at a price I could afford, I grabbed at the chance. It's my kind of camera: all shiny with wonderful engraving, and plenty of knobs and dials to twiddle!😀 Too bad if I sound like a kid with a new toy: I AM kid with a new toy, and I'm planning to enjoy it for many years, God willing and the creeks don't rise. Next purchase will be an enlarger.

Oh, and it also has a leather case to go along with it.

My best to everybody.

And this is was comes of hanging around here for too long.......Love the Barnacks and you will too!

Payasam: when I said "toy" I didn't mean that I wouldn't respect the camera and the maker's work. I agree that it is a precision optical/mechanical instrument, and I definitely will baby it! (I baby all of my equipment.) I'm very pleased with the (somewhat) ratty leather case which came with it, since this adds yet another layer of protection...

Ray*j*gun: Can I come over to play at your house?

Regards to all.

Nah you were right the first time - its a toy 😀

I recently picked up one of my Leicas again after a couple of years of using digital pretty well exclusively. I had remembered with my brain but not with my heart how that little piece of jewelery functions and how nice it is to use. When you press the shutter button on an M3 and hear that almost inaudible "click" you are in love! At least I was - again. Love the camera and like the results using film. Hate the fact that every time I press that shutter button though, I know its going to cost me about $1 in film cost and processing. And if, as is often the case, I only get two or three or four images I really like on a roll and the rest are throwaways, the cost is correspondingly higher. But I think I am now sold enough that I will keep shooting more regularly. At least you are not being cajoled into buying the latest plastic fantastic every 18 months when you shoot with these.

Welcome to the club.

Hi, excellent thread. One reason I enjoy my 1A so much is that nothing else is needed! Boys and their toys; constantly wishing to upgrade to the latest 'plastic fantastic' or searching for a bargain for the 'F'. Now it is just a Barnack and, aside from worrying about replacement cases and cheap film I just think about the picture..lovely!
Enjoy!

Now I'm getting restless - I had two 111f's and sold them a couple of years back....bad move! - I really miss them 🙁. My wife (not a photographer) says they are somehow nicer and "classier" than an 'M'.....she's often right about such things!...damn! 🙂
Dave.
