Two of the more (at least to me) respected posters here saying much the same thing and argueing over the way to say it. The strange thing to me is that both know so much, and don't seem to be able to admit the other does too.

Well, I still respect the knowledge of both of you.

As far as I can see, it boils down to this:

I don't like 'em. I think they're overrated, because (after 40 years' experience, with many folding cameras) I've mostly found 'em disappointing. Some are OK; most aren't. If you disagree, that's fine: it's not my problem. Some people like 'em. Best of luck.

Chippy's viewpoint:

Roger is wrong and doesn't know what he's talking about. He's whining and should get a life. If he disagrees he's a narcissist.

If I have misrepresented Chippy I apologize.

Another nice thing about using these funny old folders is that they don't frighten people, they amuse them! Same reaction as with Rollei TLR's, people around you become friendly and inquisitive. It makes shooting the scene, with or without people, very good naatured and relaxed. I value that, and was always bothered with the sharp intakes of breath from bystanders when wielding a £££££££'s Leica-that, IMO, is what is verging on the narcissistic.

The thing here Roger is that historically ... when someone gives the Leica M8 or M9 a bagging because they genuinely think it's a pile of dung ... you have invariably stepped in and attempted to correct their errant thought processes.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone I say! :angel:

Thanks Paolo, just ignore the fighting, it happens from time to time when people are passionate about a subject (being polite).

I’d recommend you buy a service camera from a good source as some off these cameras can no longer be fixed e.g. The frame counting/film finder on the Agfa Super Isolette or with others you will find it hard to get parts.

I bought all mine from Jurgen Kreckel (www.certo6.com) however I know a lot off people have serious issues with him and supposedly CLA’d cameras arrive dead.

I’d recommend looking out for a Super Baldalux especially if it has the Ennagon lens. The camera will fit in your jeans pocket yet is a medium format camera.

The Certo 6 is also an excellent camera but the operation can be a bit strange with the focus lever.

I've never owned a Balda camera of any kind. They always get good reviews, but I think they might be a little harder to get, and more expensive. Actually, all folders seem to have gone up in price since there was so much activity in this forum. I still think the Welta 6x6 folders are a good bargain, but certainly not the only bargain. And they are still not that hard to find nor all that expensive.
