Summaron 35mm/2.8 - weight and dimensions

When the goggles are removed, the focusing is OFF exept @ infinity. A goggled 35mm Leica-lens always needs it's goggles to focus correctly.
The goggled lenses have different inner helical mounts that activate the rangefinder. Therefore the goggled lenses focus closer than those without goggles. It makes no difference if they are used on an M3, M2, M4, M5, M4-2, M4-P, M6, M7, M8, M9 or MP, the goggles always have to stay on to focus correctly.

this is correct. the helical is different in the goggled lenses and will not properly focus with them removed.
i called Focalpoint about removing the goggles from my V1 Summilux 35mm and was told that the lens would be useless there on. he said over the years he has received countless lenses that had the goggles hacked off of them and they wind up in the parts bin.
i would guess Helen's pictures are in focus because the aperture was small...or maybe she scale focused...

i find the lens very sharp, and has lovely out of focus areas wide open. sorry for the large size, Flickr oversharpens smaller image sizes IMO.

There are no FOCUSING issues
it was more a Question of having ACCURATE Framelines
(which I now understand is not is not possible)....🙂

that's a pretty lucky thing that you can focus it correctly, but it doesn't make any sense to me.
if you want the 35 framelines to come up, i think you can grind down the little tab on the lens that engages the framelines in the camera. there is a website somewhere that explains how to do this, but i can't find it right now.

Really heavyweight Leica experts agree that focussing is not accurate when using a goggled 35mm Summaron lens without the googles. (This is not the case with goggled 50mm Summicron lenses where the purpose the goggles serve is to view only close focussing distances.)
Could you waste a frame of film by shooting something like a picket fence at an angle, at short focussing distance and with the aperture at f2.8?

or, with goggles in hand place them over the camera viewfinder and focus on something at close distance then take the goggles away and see if the RF patch is still aligned properly in the viewfinder.

if i have time later and can find my jeweller's screwdriver set, I will try this out (out of curiosity)

I've taken the goggles off of my Summaron 2.8 to clean the rectangular element. I really can't see how it can affect focusing as removing the goggles doesn't change anything on the mount. But what do I know? I didn't do any testing. Mounting this lens on any M brings up the 50mm lines but with the goggles in place, the 50mm lines are demagnified to approximate 35mm.

Of course, I put the goggles back on mine. I think they look cool in an Elvis Costello kind of way. 😎

in general with lenses i don't really shoot at Infinity much....
this summaron has a very HEAVY infinity lock
which you can struggle with to release,
so there is NO DOUBT when you are in Infinity ( i kind of like the sound of that sentence)

It's not the goggles themselves that cause the problem, it's the internal focus mechanism of the lens that doesn't couple accurately with the rangefinder on non M3 cameras.

In other words, even tho the rangefinder patches look as if they are in focus, the lens actual focus is slightly off.

It doesn't couple accurately on the other M's too when the goggles are removed. The closer you focus, the more it is off. On infinity it focuses OK.
