Hi i purchased a used m8, it has up to 4000 speed, but it`s not a m8.2 nor early type, serial number is 3103322,

Can someone tell me the difference between this m8 and an early type and an m8.2?

Is there any site to look after?

Thanks!

The m8 original has 1/8000. Shutter upgraded M8s, and M8.2s have 1/4000 max. You could possibly ask Leica customer support by email what other upgrades your M8 may have had such as framelines, covering, screen cover, etc.

I was just thinking, "Lucky Guy, got an M8u with the upgraded M8.2 shutter". That's a $1,000 upgrade.

You should honestly be happy about what you have. You got an original M8 with an upgraded quiet shutter. I can tell you the difference is substantial and I will never miss 1/8000.

Where did you get the camera from? I only ask because it seems odd you would be uninformed about such a thing, considering the additional value the upgrade adds to the camera.

You should inquire about what other upgrades your camera may have. None make as big a difference as the shutter upgrade in my opinion. The framelines are handy, but trivial. And the sapphire glass is pure novelty.

Oh

Oh

Well, got it from a Canadian dealer, just looking around i saw this silver m8 ending in 50 minutes and so i bid, were only two bids including mine.
Description said had new cicuitry, new cover, something else i dont recall, and CLA, usa warrnty one year.
By the tone of the description i think the dealer didn`t know much about this upgrade, me neither.
It must arrive the next week, my greatest concern now are
taxes:confused:.
Thanks for the info, pretty usefull!:)

Bye

Tell me more. I've been thinking about sending mine off for the upgrade, but am hesitant to lose 1/8000.

1+k more substantial? Save that money for a lens, a printer, a trip somewhere to shoot the local flavor or as a down payment for an M9 unless you need a new shutter because the current one is broken.

For the (very few) used M8's I have seen in Finland, the shutter upgrade doesn't seem to have much effect on the price. Original and upgraded ones sell for pretty much the same price. Of course, I may be off as I have seen so few sales. I bet the difference is significant in more active markets.

I bought an m8 recently which came with the new shutter. I payed £150 ($230) more than a normal one which I thought was a great deal ( I purchased the camera more though for the 2 year passport on it and 2 filters)

I had the shutter, framelines, and sapphire glass put on my M8. I would have preferred just a more durable shutter retaining the 1/8000 and especially 1/250 flash sync (so many other cameras have those specs and very durable shutters) but went for the downgrade to get more durability and a year of warranty extension. The framelines are not a deal-breaker for me, but I admit they are more convenient for my general use than even the M6 lines (I'm hoping by the time I'm ready for an M9 they have 2m framelines optional). The sapphire LCD is of no significance to me as I use Best Skins Ever protectors on all my screens and those are virtually un-scratchable and don't peel. They're the same material as Zagg but BSE sells it in sheet form (8.5x11 for $9) that is lots cheaper and I can cut it to size myself. But doing the three together made more economic sense (at the time). If I had it to do over I would not do it at all, and put the money ahead to a demo M9 at some point in the future. So if you got an upgraded M8 for the same or slightly more than a non-upgraded one, it's a great deal. For those of us who upgraded, the cost is a pure write-off.

Somebody on LUF just asked Leica about the framelines on the M9- yes - they can be changed ro 2 m but is will cost 1100$...Not worth it at all imo.

Here's what I've read recently

Here's what I've read recently

It may be that a combination of 'C' continuous mode, power loss (battery dying), and discreet mode on, may be lead to some confusion with the optical sensor detecting if the shutter is in a cocked position and/or the magnet assembly.

So it's recommended that if you plan to use C mode, with discreet mode, the slower 8.2 shutter may be an advantage.

For M8 original users, I'd recommend not using C mode with Discreet mode.

A shutter curtain blew out on my M8 and I was "torn" :D between just replacing the shutter or upgrading it. I ended up upgrading the shutter and Leica put a new cover on the camera for me at no charge. There were all kinds of suggestions that the old shutters were not as reliable, but really do not know how valid they were.

Don't miss 1/8000 really. Although I live in South Texas which is bright, bright, bright. When I am at ISO 160 and the 1/4000 starts blinking at me, I just stop down one stop. I am going to sell the M8 because I have an M9, but the M9 has the same shutter as the upgraded M8.

IMO too  It does mean they have created a 2m mask set though, so either a) there must be more demand for it than we think. or b)perhaps there's a revised M9.2 coming at Photokina which will have 2m frames (and perhaps the sapphire LCD glass), and thus they will offer them as an "upgrade" on M9.1 similar to what transpired with the M8-M8.2. or c)Leica is planning an a la carte-style program for the M9 with these options. It'd be a little weird though, because it was 2 years into M8 production that Leica revised and upgraded, whereas the M9 is just beginning to ship en-masse.

Well, at introduction the price was generally deemed to be about 1000 Euro less than could be expected.
