What do you think I should offer?

Please PM with you answer(s). A local shop has this M4 on consignment, by the serial number I date it mid 1968. Cosmetically it is a user, which is what I prefer. I don't know its history, whether it has ever had a CLA done or how many rolls have gone through it. I'm including some images.
There is a small ding on one side of the body, a few nicks and scuffing from the straps. Finder appears to be clear and frame lines work, also finder looks aligned as far as vertical and horizontal view of an object.

I want to make a fair offer for the body to compliment my M6.

Thanks B2. I had forgotten about that checklist. Will definitely take another close look at the camera tomorrow with list in hand.🙂
 
As long as it's working fine mechanically, I'd probably offer around $800, possibly $850+ since you are able to see and touch the camera, as opposed to a few pictures on the internet. Cosmetically, it looks a lot better than my $750 M4.
 
I'd call that a dent. $750? Try an advanced search on Evay and check the completed listings box. Should give an idea.

If you want to pay $750 you should offer $500. Seriously, I don't know why you want to make a fair offer. A fair offer is something you make to a friend who doesn't know what his gear is worth. With a shop one usually starts with a low offer so, if one's lucky, one can settle on a fair price in the end. Unless the shop owner's desperate he won't let it go for less than he thinks it's worth.
 
There's a nice looking M4 in the classifieds here offered for $700- and still available. That's about how much I'd pay for the one you ask about. Dealers will tend to ask a huge premium over private sales, but I wouldn't pay it. Jamie may be right about making a lowball offer. Good luck.

Not sure how to respond.

I've know the owners of this store quite well, and have been doing business with them for more than 15 years. I asked them to locate another M body for me, which I now have in hand to try over the weekend.
My offer is what I believe to be the bodies current market value. I'm willing to pay that amount and feel that getting right to the point saves time .

If the camera's owner will not accept my offer, so be it. Then it wasn't meant to be.😱
 
I bought my M4 without any dents for $611 off ebay. The low shutter speeds are off, but that is the only problem. At a store, I'd offer $650-700, but they are probably going to ask for $900 or so I'd guess.
