How screwed am I? Yashica 35 repair?

So, I just purchased my first Yashica Electro 35 from that one online auction site. They said it was in working condition, but when I received it the shutter doesn't fire, and the film rewind knob won't pop out. Am I in for some hefty repair fees to get it back to working condition?
 
yes, he sold you a dead camera saying it was working, unfair

well, maybe he removed the cell to keep it, and so you just have to buy one

otherwise he lied in the description
 
If you paid with paypal file a complaint if the seller refuses to refund in full...including shipping...
 
I'm curious, are you sure that the film rewind knob also opens the film door? Or is there a small catch on the bottom left-hand corner? You didn't say which model Electro you have.

As for the shutter not releasing, you might want to check that the self-timer lever is not interfering.

Hopefully you didn't pay too much for the camera, I usually get them for $10 or so, if they don't work I can simply use them for parts. But it's rare that I find one that can't be made to work by doing more than cleaning the battery terminals.

The shutter should still work (at 1/250th or so) even if there is no battery. Both of the examples sitting on my table now have no batteries installed, but the shutters trip just fine.
 
try googling some info, on the gt you can use any battery from 5-6 volts, i stacked two cheap cr1 cells, put some tape around and filled the rest of the battery chamber with aluminium foil. works great!
also remember that the gt/gtn has a lock mechanism for the shutter release! its the collar around the release. it could be easily just that which causes your problem.

if that doesn't work try to get a refund. good luck, its a great camera and a hell of a lens.

The shutter is supposed to function at 1/500 without a battery.
It could very well be the self timer causing the problem if it is jammed in the cocked position. If it is uncocked, the lever will be at the uppermost end of it's slot. Anywhere else in the slot will cause the shutter to not trip. If it is not uncocked, it will have to be removed to free things up. The camera will work perfectly well without the ST mechanism installed since it is a self contained module.

I'm pretty sure it was the self-timer that was keeping the shutter from firing. I took it Columbus Camera Exchange (which, if you are in the Columbus, OH area you should definitely check out) the other day. I was going to see if they'd buy it back for parts, but before I could get the entire story out of my mouth the owner shoved a Minolta Hi-Matic E in my hand and said "Here, take this." And then he wouldn't accept payment! So in exchange for a broken Electro 35 that I had no hopes of repairing, I got a fully function Hi-Matic. I love that place. Does anyone have both cameras that they can give me a comparison? Maybe let me know what I'm missing out on not having an Electro?
PS - I was also able to have my money refunded by the eBay seller. They didn't even want the camera back...

Seems it is GSN made by Minolta 🙂 Well, speeds range differs, but normally it's quite enough. Only drawback I see is fully automatic shutter and maybe Hi-Matic isn't eating-any-battery like GSN.

But working camera ALWAYS is better than BROKEN one!
 
Hi Matic E!! You will like this camera for its near perfect lens, focus and colour rendering. As automatic or even more so than the Yashica Electros... (1/500 default shutter speed if batteries flat.. Minolta no default that I know of).
Leica were almost jealous of this camera!! (Don't quote me)
I have some excellent shots. Anyway, good score!
