Please see left side of this photo. A similar blemish - some much lighter - is on every negative in a roll of 36 xp2. Is this a development mistake, or a camera glitch, such as a pinhole light leak? As you can see, there is a little magenta smear nearby. Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I am fearful my contest effort is sabotaged ...

I don't think a development problem would appear in the exact same spot in every frame. No physical damage to the negatives, right? Like those holes you got back recently?

I would suspect a pinhole but -- as I've not experienced any so far -- I'm not sure. Also, I seem to recall you checked the shutter with a flashlight. A bright spot on the pressure plate, maybe?

Sorry, don't know about the marks, not something you get on HP5+, coloured marks. Should those trees in the background be of a similar tone across the scene?

Not really a bright spot. A slightly worn area, but I would not think reflective. I just checked the shutter again. I cannot see any leaks ...

Wouldn't a pinhole light leak give a bright spot? For a dark spot on a positive, you would have to mask the light in some way. I can't imagine how that could happen in the film gate unless some debris was in the way.

I've just spent a few hours trying to set up the shutters on my Zorki 5b so as to get the fastest speed to run without any fade across the frame. For the second film (only a few exposures on each) I can still see uneven exposure across the frame on 1/500th shots.

They look a little like your exposure.

Oops! so many posts!

Are these scans provided by the film processor, or can you see the blemish on the negs?

If you are going to run another film, try at least one blank frame (cover the lens) for a frame which is left in place for a few minutes. This could show up light leaks which aren't anything to do with the shutter movement.
For another test, on the fastest speed take the same simple scene (like your picture) twice on the same settings. Take one with the camera upside down. If exposure variations are naturally due to the scene, the two will look the same. If you get a more exposed area on opposite sides of the frame, you have some shutter anomaly.

I think you need to have a word with your processing service. First they mess up your negs, now your scans?

Glad to hear it's not the camera.

Paul, the following may not help in this situation, __but i have just got over the worry of leaks in my Kiev. Had a roll of BW400 processed and every frame had what looked like a light leak issue so i put a roll of rollie retro through to confirm, processed at home and hey, no problems, then i did a second roll to make sure and again no issues. I put it down to the `lab' rats.
There is also something else next to the magenta spot, sort of looks like an indentation.
regards
CW

I just double-checked my negs in bright light and with magnification: no blermishes. got to ber the scanning. Thanks.

Good news! Whilst you are shooting for the comp, try a few shots at speeds less than the fastest, just as a backup in case the fastest are spoiled by uneven exposure.
