Epson V500 or Canon CanoScan 8800F?

Due to the burn out of my old scanner, I need a new one now.
I am split bettewen the epson or the canon and need some advice. Both are costing here 195€ and 200€ is my limit and also I need a all-around scanner, flatbed and film.
Any advice?
 
I had the some doubt some time ago and choosed the CanoScan 8800F (I was told the V500 would soon be discontinued, by this may not be true). It gives good results for web posting both in 120 and 135 film. The original software, which I still use, is not perfect but with any of those two scanners an option for VueScan (or other ) may be a good decision. I will go that way soon.

PS- Best pices for CanosCan 8800F in Portugal were at Pixmania at the time I made my choice (but beware : the original power cable needed an adapter to local standards)
 
These scanners seem very comparable. I have the Epson V500, which I love. It does great scans of 35mm, slides, 120 and regular documents. The software is excellent and useful for batch scanning. Highly recommended!
 
I see. I was more inclined to the epson, I did not know the canon. Today I did the review research and found out the canon. If both are the same from "line" and both give fine and decent results it will probably be a matter of taste.
 
I also have the V500.......can't fault it in any way. I recommend it. (Well, I wish the manual was available in hard copy).
 
Reading a lot of reviews, I've found the main consensus to be that the 8800f is better for reflective media, whilst the v500 is better for transparencies. But only very small differences.
 
Hmmmm. The trouble is that they are both at the same price, so It makes things harder. I do not use much transparencies, but I have a few of them in MF, and I still ahve 2 rols to use. The rest is kodachrome and I do not know I can scan it correctly.
 
I had a canon 8800f,used it very little.When I needed it for some work,it died a quick death.Nothing but an error telling me the lamp was warming up.A friend also had one and his had many problems.Next one I go for will be an epson.Just my 2 cents ......
 
I prefer the Epson because its software seems to offer more tweakability in its most advanced mode and the fact that Epson's film holders hold the film slightly higher off the glass so there is slightly less chance of Newton Rings.

For what its worth, I ordered the Epson v500 the other day. Will be using it for MF (6x12 primarily).
 
Well, after some debating with a friend, I will go to the epson! It's a pitty I can not afford the v600 but, It's life. V500 Will be order today!
 
Go for the V500 I had to return my Canoscan 8800F like 3 times before it actually worked ... (each time I got a new one).
If I would be able to choose again I'd go for the Epson..
 
The V600 is for all practical purposes a V500 with twice the capacity for transparency scanning (number of frames). Image quality wise its the same scanner. That´s why I opted for the V500. The only other option for me would have been the v700, a better scanner which also can handle 4x5 LF. I was very tempted, but here in Norway it is 2.5 times the price of a v500.
 
When I bought my v500, I tested the 8800f and the similar Hp model. 8800f and v500 were very similar, but v500 is a bit better, imho.
 
I just ordered a v500 off eBay for $160USD and free shipping. I was reading up on the Canon 8800, and found people complaining about the slide holder and other little things.
 
My v500 arrived today, my first scan is nothing special, but at least it goes to show that its not difficult to get into the act, SW could hardly be simpler:

I recently got an Epson v500 and am pretty happy with it after figuring a few things out. I began with Vuescan and found for some reason I was getting blurry scans. I then tried Silverfast and loved the color, but could not live with it's lack of ICE support for the v500.

So I went back to the Epson Scan software and am fairly happy with it. Here's an example...I'm happy with the overall sharpness. I have no idea why Vuescan was giving me blurry scans of the same frames without even moving them inside the scanner...

Pickep up 3 hours ago, from the store. Just installed and tried out the scanner, but no negatives yet. Tomorrow I'll have more time to do it!
