The Official RFF FIFA World Cup 2010 Thread

Meh, if the Dutch hadn't scored that second goal I feel they did not deserve to have won. And towards the end they were stalling quite a bit again.

Still, nice opening game for the World Cup for my team ;)

They generally do it... And they usually get benefits from that behavior... 45 more minutes to check if they do... I know the rain's been tough, but they seem to be playing horribly...

Cheers,

Juan

EDIT: They did it... It's a tie! 1-1!

The Aussies just learned the fundamental rule of football, as explained by Gary Lineker:

“Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win” :bang:

A long time ago maybe but they didn't in 1966.

"They think its all over, it is now".

Paraguay has to be happy with that tie. The Italians put together some nice attacks but could not finish them. Just goes to show what a set-piece goal from a plucky team can do.
The Blue can be had, I think, as Paraguay showed ...

What a disappointment! I was looking forward to see Italy play, but in the last 15 minutes of the 2nd half, I literally fell asleep, only to be woken by my wife's occasional "Oh no!" or "What the!" when Italy had botched another attack (she was rooting for them)...

Holy %$&*! I know there's not much I can say that won't sound like bragging, but let me say this:

I am usually very critical of our national team, and in the past, they were often (while successful) a pain to watch. But yesterday was just plain brilliant, there was really nothing I didn't like about their game.

The red card was really too harsh, but I doubt its absence would have changed the outcome much. It just seemed like we caught the Australians on the wrong foot.

I am looking forward to see Italy, Brazil, Spain, Holland and Portugal play... and hoping for some more nice surprises from "smaller" teams...

I agree. I rooted for the Netherlands in the final in 1974 (lived in Germany at the time) and ever since. But lately the German game has gone from boring to being great fun to watch. It started just prior to the last WC, and has kept on going.

The Netherlands however, were a disappointment yesterday. Nothing like the stuff they are known for. I felt sorry for them in the Euro 2008, but now I don´t know what to think.

Brazil are fun to watch, but less so since 1994, when they started to get organised. Portugal I want to like, but they´ve the largest amount of primadonnas on the field, and that´s too rich for me. Italy has it´s moments, but they can also bore you to death. The French under Domenech don´t seem to be a team at all, just a bunch of individualists. Spain are good, but again - to get where they are now, they´ve sacrificed the spectacular for the rather boring. Argentina can be an outsider. I think even Maradonna could´t ruin this team completely. England has problems, a brilliant coach, a brilliant attitude, but lack quality players in a number of key roles. Having to field Heskey say´s it all.

I really hope an African and an Asian team do well, its about time Europe and South America got their feathers rustled.

they (asia and africa) have been doing very well as of late. i mean look at the performances of Japan and Korea over the past decade! Ghana looked very athletic and moved the ball very well. Africa has a long history of strong teams like Cameroon in the late 80's and early 90's. Nigeria lost the opening match but don't count them out yet... some great footballers on the roster.

South Africa also has the ability to rattle some cages.

a lot of these lesser known countries have huge, football hungry populations to draw from which is turning out to be a big advantage. The Asian teams (Japan, S. Korea) also seem to have endless heart and fitness.

with all that said Der Mannshaft seem to have set the bar so far!

That was NOT a good performance of brasil. Two good actions, two goals. No football firework. What an arrogant performance. They can do better.
