My guess is that he wanted (or was under orders) to get ejected for the next game to get rid of his yellow card, which would otherwise have stuck on for another two rounds of more critical games.

That's an interesting theory but it's definitely wrong. The card records of all players will be cleared after the group stage so everyone goes into the knockout rounds with a clean record. It's in the rules of the tournament (for this World Cup at least).

No, yellows cards will be clean in quarter-final. So if Kaka obtain a yellow card in the third game will miss eights-final. Now he skip third match, and if he suffer a yellow card in eights, will not affect the quarter-final presence. He did not seem very upset with the red card.

One of the great things about football is there is always something to argue about...
The NZ goal was not offside as the ball went from two Italians to the scorer. The Italian goal was a penalty that came because of a dive. They were lucky to get a draw.
Keita's play acting at the end of the game was wrong, but did no one else see that he was retaliating for repeated play acting from Brazil that got him booked just before? That does not make it right, of course, but makes it easier to understand. Especially in the context of a game where Brazil won the match because of the second goal, and that came from cheating. The first goal was magnificent, but Ivory Coast were fighting until the second goal and had no chance after.

Great, we agree that we can disagree
To me, no offside too on NZ goal vs Italy. The player is not offside when NZ plays the free kick and it is then touched by two Italian players.
The Italian goal was a clear penalty. Obvious that the NZ player grabbed the shirt of the Italian player. I know everybody does it, but in this case the ref saw it, that is called lack of experience by NZ. As for Italy being lucky to get the draw, I guess we did not watch the same game ...
Ivory Coast committed several aggressions during the second half, Keita should have seen red straight for one of his tackles where he did not go for the ball. I hope he gets suspended, I have lost all respect for him.
Like it or not, there will always be a grey zone in football as refs are not robots. Otherwise, what would we argue about

I did not interpret it this way. I believe the ref asked Fabiano if he had used his arm to control the ball because he could not clearly see it from his point of view. This resulted in the weird exchange but had the ref seen clearly the arm control, he would had whistled. He left it to the benefit of the doubt, which is how it should be in football. Not seen = not whistled.
Fabiano might still be punished for that, by hindsight =)

A football thread on RFF? Crikey
These matches have been very very strange so far.
Keita / Kaka - the ref was looking at the ball the whole time, Kaka took it suprisingly cool.

Perhaps there should be dozens of penalties in every game... but compared to other games, Italy were very lucky to have that referee. The player dived when he lost the ball, not when the defender was admiring his shirt gently. Italy are/were by far the better team yesterday and every day against NZ, but they could not score and might have lost from a late NZ chance.
There were some terrible tackles from Ivory Coast and I would not argue against more than one red, but Brazil were no angels either.

Have you realised that we are talking about referee and not about enjoyable games? Referee's level in the cup is really bad.
Take a look of Switzerland-Chile, a complete shame. He is showing yellow cards just 'in case', and the red card was overreacted. A pitty.
Go Chile!

Refs should come from the major leagues only (Premier, Liga, Calcio, Brazil, ...). You can't ask a ref that officiates games like Abu-Dhabi vs Dubai (with all respects to those teams) all season to suddenly get the sense of rythm and athletics of a World Cup game. The ref did indeed overreact, it shoud have been yellow only.Have you realised that we are talking about referee and not about enjoyable games? Referee's level in the cup is really bad.

This being said, Chile deserved the victory.

So I gorged on the WC today having been starved of football the last week. I thought Portugal were great, loved the way they played after they scored the second goal. Wasn't particularly impressed by Spain though; they have good technique and movement but two goals from all of that passing isn't good enough. They seem to want to pass the ball into the net, Torres can be direct but he seemed out of sync. I particularly didn't like the way they played the last 20 mins; no ambition at all.

I think Torres is not well recovered...
The situation of Spain's group is interesting because Spain doesn't know what to go for in the third match: if Brazil and Portugal end up being 1 and 2, Spain will prefer to be 1 to play with Portugal, but if Brazil loses against Portugal, Brazil would be 2 and Portugal 1, and then Spain would prefer to be 2 to avoid Brazil... Both matches are on friday, but Brazil plays a few hours before Spain, so the spanish team will decide what to go for after that Brazil-Portugal result, and just a moment before their match...
Cheers,
Juan

Juan, if you want to be champion you do not care about the rival you need to defeat everyone.
I want to face Germany in quarters, I really do.

all they need to do (zee germans) is to play their usual brand of level headed football and score goals, the more the merrier!

Atto,
Any team prefers to beat in a world cup easier teams first. If I were a player, I'd prefer to fight against Brazil in a bigger match, maybe the final: it's not about fear... Some other times (a lot of times) two great teams have to fight before the final, and it's a shame when one of them must go... If you think differently, I can accept that... But what I said was not my idea: it's what players, coach and common people are talking about... And believe me: every player wants to be champion and every player cares about the next rival...
Cheers,
Juan
