The lens is oh so sweet, and the layout of the controls is pure genius.... a perfect camera.

I agree! It is a perfect transition camera for a film shooter. All the controls are where they belong. Looks like you are off to a good start with it!
 
Congrats on your new camera, I have one along with my film M. The lens is so sweeeet. I never shoot from the screen, only the viewfinder. Its a true viewfinder digital with almost the same feel as shooting a film M. The pics are top notch that come out of that camera. This is one of mine.

Thanks Memphis. I didn't know If this topic should go under the Digital Leica, or Digital RF categories, and didn't realize the D2 was a SLR.... No matter what it is I love this camera....
 
I didn't like mine. Yeah the lens had a great look but it made me realize that I will never buy another variable aperture zoom-- ever. I tried to like it and kept it too long. It felt like a plastic toy, but yes-- the lens was nice and so were the controls. If it had a fixed aperture and was not made out of tinsel, I would still own one (maybe two even).
 
:eek: Memphis, you're my hero!!!! I thought you had to shoot weddings with multipul uber Canon's and lenses the size of a VW Micro Bus!!!!
Just kidding all you folks that do weddings....
Filmfan, compared to almost all of the other digital cameras I've used the D2 feels plenty solid. But I baby my cameras so it could be made out of soap bubbles and be fine with me ;)

Yeah, except it's missing the one thing that would make it an SLR... namely the SLR bit... but what would I know?
 
"SLR" or not (!!), I thought this was a great camera. Its a fixed lens, but fast at f2, and a good range, 28mm-90/100. I love the size, ergo, built in tilt/flash. But definitely has its limitations: smallish sensor by today's standards, the AWB was always off, slow RAW buffering: even with a replaced sensor. If I was ONLY shooting B&W, I would think of buying another again. As far build quality: these camera's are several years old, and still used widely today, I think thats testament enough.
 
I very nearly bought one, but ended up with the R-D1 instead. I still rather like the Digilux though. And yes, its a point and shoot, albeit a nice one. An SLR it is not, no R for one thing.

It's an slr and there's really no way around it...

the flaw with the 2 is that it didn't have interchangable lenses - the lenses on the 3 are pretty massive though

FLAW? A 28-90mm equiv zoom, f2.0-2.4 of impeccable optical quality and beautiful rendering. Show me an interchangable zoom with similar specs/performance. I could add which is affordable and can be carried size and weight wise, but I don't need, since we all know there is NONE.
The Digilux 2 is one of the best digital cameras ever made.
Panasonic/Leica - put in a new sensor which is excellent up to iso 400 and good up to 800 (more is not needed with this lens) and state of the art electronics, incl an updated EVF and screen and you have a winner.
 
I owned one once. I loved using it, but hated the images it (more like I) produced. It felt cheap, had a terrible sensor, a worse than terrible viewfinder, and only performed well in the best of light (where any camera would perform well). I did however, LOVE the handling for a digital cam. It felt just like my film camera. This being said, I have seen many nice photos taken with it so it goes to show that in the right hands, any camera is capable of anything (to some extent). Enjoy yours and take advantage of hand-holding it with slow shutter speeds. I found that I could take a sharp image hand-holding at 1/8 second easily. Once, I took a photo of my house at dusk with a 2 second shutter speed hand-held and it was a usable image.

I have had a Digilux 2 for some time now and I have been thouroughly enjoying it.

Perfect optics, outstanding (=perfect) man-camera interface, acceptable viewfinder - what is there not to like?!? Well, maybe the mediocre high ISO performance (do not venture above 400 unless you want to simulate film grain) and slow RAW buffer. As for the last part, just shoot jpg, they're close to perfect SOOC.

I should add that I have just sold the D2, but only because have started shooting film, so it has for half a year jst been gathering dust. It is now off to its third life (I was the second owner) in the hands of a brilliant, young photog.
 
Um, well, er, without a mirror to do the reflex bit it just can't be a Single Lens Reflex can it (and yes I have one)?

As for the fixed aperture complaint, why not use it on "A" mode all the time and set the aperture to f/2·4 ? But, seriously, an aperture of F/2 at the 28mm end and f/2·4 at the 90mm end is not far short of perfection, imo.
