I suggest everyone try to look at the book " Exploding into Life" where Eugene Richards documents his spouse and partner's terminal cancer. I documented my wifes breast cancer and treatment till the last 3 weeks of her life when for reasons unknown to me I never thought to pick up my camera to shoot her. I have a body of work, very comprehensive, that somday I plan to print showing the relationship of my wife and son and my wifes journey the last 13 months of her life. I just haven't printed it yet and it has been 12 years. My wife encouraged me to document the whole process. I regret not shooting the last 3 weeks.
On a slightly different note , on more than one occasion , I have had the sole "good " photograph of someone who has died. People are very grateful for these types of portraits and it is gratifying to me to be able to give survivors a nice portrait to remember their loved ones.
