How easy is it to do this? Does the Epson scanner work with OSX?

You are trying with an uncut roll? will be hard to do it -not imposible-.

no, I want to scan my family's old pictures, all of which were processed at drugstores etc. The negs are cut into strips of 4, so I was wondering if I could just lay them all flat on the glass surface, or if I would need to use a neg holder.

The best camera is one that still works!
I don't think you would get correct focus doing it that way unless you space the negs up with another sheet of glass maybe. The scanner's focus point would be set for the film plane in the holders I'd imagine?

yeah I was concerned about that too, but I saw that at least one other person in another thread mentioned that s/he scanned entire rolls on the V500.
I guess if there's no good way to scan an entire roll at one time, might as well go for the V300 which is half the price of the V500 right now.

You can't scan more than 2 stips of 6 images at one time with the v500. The illumination in the lid isn't full width. You can't scan "a whole roll" unless its only a 12 exp roll and you are willing to cut one of the three 4 frame strips into a pair of twos.

I see - thanks for the answer. Is there a scanner out there that could reasonably do 4-6 strips of negatives cut into 4's all at once?

I scan 35mm with my V700, 4 strips of 5 shots at once (5 shots are easier for me to archive than 6, even though the scanner can fit 6 shots per strip in the film holder).

Do you use holders or do you place them flat on the glass?

Hey Renzu, do you scan most of your shots on the v700? I think they look great (not just the scanning, of course) and I haven't been able to get proper focus on my v700 for 35mm (medium format appears fine). Did you do anything special to get the 35mm holders adjusted for proper focus?I scan 35mm with my V700, 4 strips of 5 shots at once (5 shots are easier for me to archive than 6, even though the scanner can fit 6 shots per strip in the film holder).

alien8, yes all my 35mm shots were scanned with the v700. I also sharpen them a little in Lightroom together with color/contrast adjustments.
I use the stock holders that come with the scanner. Included with the scanner are some little plastic thingies that you can use to elevate the film holder, but after trying them I found that the regular height was the best after all.

Depends on the volume (and how much you value your time at), but you might be better off just sending them out with ScanCafe.

Well I've got about three boxes of family photos - about 100 rolls of 24 exp each. Doing one or two rolls a day wouldn't be too bad - would be done in a few months time, and I spend so much time in front of the computer anyway... Most of these are color negatives so using a DSLR setup isn't really an option.
If the V500 can do two strips at once I think it would be manageable.

I used to use a Dual Scan IV...now that was slow, one strip at a time. I think this time around, I'll buy extra holders from eBay so I'll always have film to feed.
