Hey guys. I bought my Mamiya 7 a month or so ago and as soon as I got it I noticed it was out of calibration. I sent it back, they say they gave it to Mamiya to be recalibrated, and then sent it to me.

I get it back, still can't make the images line up (patch image was higher or lower by quite a bit, can't remember which). So I give it to my local shop, Kurt's Camera Repair, which has a great rep. They calibrate it, and I'm still unsure that it's perfect... it was very hard to focus and I knew the infinity was off a bit. I gave it back and they said it did look like it was slightly out of calibration, so they re-calibrated it and held on to it for a couple days to make sure it wasn't slipping, and gave it back.

Anyway, the infinity adjustment definitely still is off a little bit. The lens stops at infinity like it should, but I can always make the image look a tiny bit sharper if I turn it a very small amount back away from infinity. Would this cause a big problem with normal focusing? I'm not sure how these things work yet.

The rest seems OK, but sometimes it looks like the patch image is slightly higher than the normal image, even if I can align them side-to-side. It can be difficult to tell once the images are lined up whether the patch is still higher though. I have a feeling that this slight issue might be causing focusing to be more difficult than it should be (harder to tell when things are in focus). Are the infinity adjustment and this maybe related?

Any ideas? Should I try maybe calibrating the camera myself if it's not too difficult? I'm using the 80mm btw.

Thanks!

There's a thread on here I've linked to a few times now I think, it explains how to do this calibration yourself. I did just that, it was very simple, took only a few minutes; I haven't had issues since.

Your case of course could be different, I assume if I'm able to fix it the people you gave the camera to did the same.

Yeah - does the explanation cover adjusting the height of the ghost image? Or is the height controlled by the same screw as the infinity?

Your eye position is likely to affect the vertical alignment, as it does on some of my cameras. Move your eye a bit up or down and see if the alignment seems to change.

On the infinity issue, some larger cameras are deliberately set up to focus a bit past infinity to allow for changes due to thermal expansion. Just use it and see how it does. Also, the RF is sensitive enough that something 1/8 mile away is not infinity, so you need to check it on something farther... like the moon!

hello, I have the same issue, I'm new into Mamiya 7 world and I have noticed after the first shots that the ghost image was lower than the 'real' one which makes it difficult to focus.
is this issue a mistake and should be fixed? I have asked a few guys here (in Argentina) and nobody seems to know well. so I dont know if I should keep focusing like this or I should take it to a repair shop for calibrating it.
thanks for your answers.

Martin, where is this thread? cant find it.

thank you Martin, I've been searching for it to see if I can do it myself, since after 15 days the shop couldnt repair it and I'm afraid I will have to take it to the repair shop in London once I go to England:bang:
I will take a look.
cheers
