Is there a lens out there that will fit Leica M mount that is really really bad, like Holga bad? Yeah yeah yeah, why would I want to do that......

I like using the M bodies but want to have something that will mimic a truly poor lens for a project of "antique" looking shots. I already have an M body and I figure a truly crappy lens would be cheap.

Any ideas greatly appreciated. Sandpaper on the elements?

there are some russian screwmount lenses you can get for under 20 bucks...they're probably still too good, though!

just buy some 'ugly' grade screw mount bangers... shouldn't cost too much (haze, scratches, fungus etc - something really nasty) then whack it on an adapter and away you go.

without a doubt. Noctilux. soft OOF images. in fact, you cannot see the difference between image and background.

*sigh* people still love the lens.

scratch up a filter....now that's a brilliant idea, why didn't i think of that, cheap and easy....thanks, will let you know how it turns out.....

If you take sandpaper to the front of that 50mm f/1 Noct, it will become ASPH after enough elbow grease...

50/1.0 or 50/0.95 ASPH ? :D

the 1.0 was bad, but gave usable images when stopped down to f/8.

Leica has made it unusable with the 0.95 version.

this lemon of a lens design by Leica has elevated this lens to collectible status. it is apparent from the prices, no?

I'd go this route. Find a few matching lenses. Maybe a banged up jupiter-8 or two. If they have been manufactured in different years, you might be able to take them apart and mix the elements to some interesting effect. I think there's some take-apart tutorials our own Brian Sweeney has authored. Find them, learn how take apart your lenses and enjoy.

If you're really really serious about getting a Holga lens on your M, MS-OPTICAL out of Japan offers this service. Expect to pay a bit of cash.

I have a beat up Summarit 1.5 - bad front element cleaning marks I believe - which produces images looking like this:

Most of these were shot relatively wide open which I'm sure contributes. I'm looking forward to seeing what the second roll with it looks like. I thought about selling the lens but am concerned I may be becoming attached to the results, particularly as it is my fastest glass with the exception of a Lynx 14.

Uhm. Off topic, sorry. A scratched up filter shot at a wide aperture may also be worth trying.

How about this one, or one just like it. It works with any 'duct tape compatible' camera:

The single plastic element is from a 2x toy binocular (from a Capt. Crunch box I think.)

^ that's awesome. someone should make these and sell them for $20 to the art kids and hipsters to put on their DSLR's and what-not.

How crappy do you want? I've got a skink zone plate mounted in LTM that is maximum lo-fi. No glass, but much faster than a pinhole. Equivalent of f46, I think - pan focus. Have to shoot ISO 1250 and slow shutter speeds on the M8 with it, but motion blur will be the least of your worries! It renders everything in a very soft glow. Haven't got any of my own examples online, but visually summarises the effect: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lochkamera/4776511841/

Come on... Are you serious?

The 0.95 Version is fantastic. Yes it's expensive but it's a great lens.

Buy a 50mm Meniscus lens and a 50mm lens with bad glass, I-61 or J-8 are good candidates.

Take the glass out of them, and mount the Meniscus lens.

Monocle lenses, and other project lenses are popular and easy to do.

Or just use the front of the J-8 and back of a Xenon, set the spacing right for 51mm, and get an RF coupled custom lens.
