I'm really exited about this lens, I even started thinking about buying a 5D for it
Considering you have an M8, the Nikon D700 will better match the look of the files. The Canon tends to have a very processed look, very 'digital' may I say....please no flamers, and yes I have used them all

Yes, but I can only image it this way due to the amount of correction involved in it's performance-production design.
I've still got my fingers crossed for an M mount version, cause even though its gonna be a great lens, I just don't have a need for this on my D3s.

That does look pretty big, but you're right about the hoods. I wonder how the CV 35mm 1.2 would fit into that diagram, but again it's the diameter that might make the difference.
Any thoughts on the f2 vs the 1.4 in terms of IQ? Both look awesome. I'm trying to find something that gives me the 35mm1.2 look for my canon. I like the 35L, but not enough to make me buy one. The canon 35 2.0 is pretty bad on my 7D, very lifeless.

i saw a proto-type of this lens in March. It is HUGE - I first thought it was some kind of 50-150 fast zoom!!!!
From what I understand though - it is one of those "damn the torpedoes" - lets design a lens with as good performance as possible and whatever size it is - is what you get.
Zeiss has some really good designers and they know glass - and supposedly they put it all into this lens! Did not have a chance to shoot with it - so it is all speculative. It certainly looks impressive though - one of these on a Nikon D3S and you can cancel that gym-club membership.
Ok, maybe they could make a smaller one in Rf mount? It is up against stiff competition though, the Nokton 35f1.2 and the new Summilux 35f1.4 Asph.

You may, but others will disagree. I think the sensor in the MkI 5D is pretty sweet.
I'm curious as to whether the performance advantage this lens may have over the 35L is worth losing autofocus and gaining size and weight.

I've been having a good think about the new Distagon today and my gas has subsided for several reasons. Because this lens has no manual aperture adjustment it won't be any use on my Nikon film bodies which concerns me ... at 1600 Euros it's not exacly cheap depending on your outlook and will only be of service digitally unless I get the likes of an F6 or F100 which I don't really want at this stage.
From all accounts the old f2 Distagon is an exceptional lens in it's own right and because the D700 has such superb high ISO performance f2 is not really an issue .. at my last gallery opening I used a 35mm f2 Nikkor and it was plenty fast enough!
The other thing that's occured to me is with the new 1.4 hitting the shelves there could be some bargains around for the current Distagon.

Where do you see that it has no aperture ring? I think you are just looking at the picture of the Canon version...if you go to the ZF.2 compatibility chart next to the press release, it says that it has an aperture ring and works in manual and aperture priority with the F3...

Ok ... I must have been looking at the wrong lens!
I still tend to think the old version could probaly serve me well enough on the D700 though.
I notice Popflash has the lens listed but no stock yet at over $1800.00

Thats the ZE (for canon) version you see, the ZF version of of the SLR line always has an aperture ring.

Those images look incredible. I have a 7D now, but I'm also thinking about picking up a used mk1 5d and then a few primes. This lens looks awesome, but I'm starting to get a little concerned on size. Been thinking that maybe I should pick up the 2.0. Is that version discontinued?

Those were taken with the contax version which is different optical design to the new distagon 1.4.
The old one was reaaaaally good from what I've seen though. I can't imagine it'd be worse than the contax version, especially seeing how it's physically larger.

For comparisons sake, the canon 35mm f1.4L is 580grams. The new distagon f1.4 is 850grams.
I considered the 35L to be pretty heavy on my 5d, for a wide-normal prime.

That is heavy ... I just checked the weight of my 50mm f1.4 ZF Planar and that's 390 grams!
The 35mm f1.2 Nokton is 490 and that seems like a big heavy lens!

It will balance well on a D3 or D3s though...I wouldn't think it would be too ergonomic on a D90 or smaller camera...

Hmmmm, half-again as heavy as the 35L, and manual focus, too. I'm thinking that for the close, tight shooting I like to do, this lens could well be an ergonomic nightmare to use, no matter how excellent its imaging qualities.

I gotta say, if it's better than the 35L at f1.4 I will be extremely impressed. My old 35L is intensely good at f1.4 in every way.
