rd1 and 2 lens combo

You and me both. It's the only non-Hex, M-mount lens I own and has successfully warded off the urge to get the 35 M Hex.

Particularly on the R-D1, I think I would feel more confident that the 35/1.2 would be [a] easier to focus accurately, and more suitable to those situations for which I require a fast lens. Then I guess this isn't a one-lens-kit discussion. 😀
 
at the moment i have 35mm cron iv and i think i am gonna add 50 lux to it in the nearest future. just need to read some reviews coz i do not know the difference between all those luxes on the market today. 1st version, 2nd one, E43 . i am also considering sonnar 50 1.5.
so hard to choose

Most of my Epson pics are shot with that combo.

I just bought a used R-D1 and when I was deciding a two lens kit I had in mind either Zeiss 25 Biogon and 50 Sonnar (38-77 FOV) or CV 15 and 35/1.2 (23-54 FOV). Gone with the latter because of price and because 35/1.2 is something special. Just received them and maybe because I can not compare them to anything else I immediately fell in love with them. Especially with 35/1.2, its VF intrusion is perfectly bearable, size OK, weight being the only noticeable nuisance if I need to find a fault with it. OOF and color rendition, focus throw, built quality, are all excellent. It's a lens I feel like I have just bought an expensive Leica. Since you love 40 mm and speed, I can only figure out the size/weight is the reason you just don't feel OK with that lens, no? Anyway I understand sometimes it does not work the same for everybody.

I feel that way about the Nokton 35mm f/1.2 too. Great delivery and a pleasure to use. Whether on R-D1 or any film bodies. It is also my first choice of the many 35mm lenses currently with me.

my two lens kit for the RD1:

alt #1 - CV 15 + one of the zm 35 biogons

alt #2 - zm 18 distagon + one of the zm fifties (planar or c-sonnar)

alt #3 - zm 18 distagon + CV 40
 
With adequate lighting, CV 12 and CV 40 are the two I use most.

The 12's perspective is unique and the 40 is just long enough to get nice subject separation at wider apertures without requiring as much distance as a 50 (i.e. focusing is easier.) Also the CV 40 matches the R-D1's 35mm framelines well.

At night I carry the CV 28/2 and CV 40, but unless I'm in tight quarters the 40 usually stays on it.
 
For a 2-lens outfit, I always pick a moderate wide and a moderate tele. For the R-D1, I chose a CV 25/4 and a CV 50/2.5...38/75mm equivalent; the lenses are both small.

In using the 25/4, I compose tight using the 28 frameline, which results in ~10% print margin all round. If one has to use the 35 frameline [eyeglass wearer], the print margin will be ~15%. You can see for yourself photographing a rectangular object by aligning one corner tightly with the frameline...I use my flat panel TV as target, while sitting on the couch. 😀

If I had to choose only one lens, I would pick a 28mm. A small Rokkor-M 28mm or the older CV 28/3.5 would be nice...or maybe the CV 35/1.4. I tend to use ISO 400 so lens speed is not so critical.
 
There are those who choose lenses based only on personal preference...nothing else would do.

Then there are those who want an array where realistic photo opportunity encountered can be covered. The range and quantity is related to cost.

A method is to space the lens based on a factor...commonly 1.4 or 2; or angles...doubling, halving or set increment.

If the 1.4 method is used, then 18mm, 25mm 35mm, 50mm 75mm. I chose 35 and 75mm...in R-D1 terms 25/50 two lens combination.
 
i'm going with the canon 28/2.8 and 50/1.4 (or the HC 5cm/2 nikkor) for 2 lens kit.

i'll add a canon 35/1.8 or nikkor 35/2.5 for a one lens walk around.

i love these old lens for their build and finish just as much as the look of the images i get from them.
