Nikon 8000ed cannot scans!

I've gone to scan some films with Coolscan 8000ED and am getting a problem here:

1. Scanner ready lights blinks rapidly when the scanner's doing self-scanning after few minutes that I inserted the film holder into it.
2. When the green light blinks rapidly, nikon scan 4 was down and unable to choose any of the function, but then I took out the film holder, the Nikon scan 4 seems workable again.

I had tried it in the NIKON CS center before I bought it, and it was properly working out.
Has anyone any experience of this problem?

"Doing a bit of research on the internet indicates that it might be because the scanner is somehow positioning the film carrier incorrectly - which seems to make some kind of sense to me because in the past I've had problems where the scanner would make a loud banging noise after moving the film holder all the way into the scanner, and then seem to misplace the position of the holder so that pressing eject would only move the film holder half way out. Opening the scanner up and moving the carriage back and forwards seem to sort that out."

The quote above is from me. This happened (several times) after repair. I got tired of taking the thing back to the repair shop, so I had a look inside and moved the film carriage back and forward manually (by turning the shaft from the motor, on the right hand side) and this fixed it.

The last time I went to use my scanner the same thing happened again, but this time moving the carriage manually didn't solve the problem.

When the scanner starts, it moves the carriage into slightly the wrong position, blocking the light path from the led to the sensor. When you turn the scanner on, it initialises itself and then moves the end of the film holder into the light path so it can sense what holder is inside.

On mine, since the holder is not in the right place, the light flashes rapidly and Nikon Scan then throws up an error saying the holder is incorrect or something like that. Since I've been busy lately I haven't had a proper look or thought about getting a professional to do so so I can't really offer any useful suggestion.

If yours is still under guarantee I'd just get the shop to repair or replace it for you.

Thank you for the prompt reply, I think I had seen your works in flickr, the same ID name as you used here, and they're impressive.

Btw, I actually don't know how to manual focus, it sounds like I need to move the film carriage to and frowhen I notice the carriage is moving to the wrong position, however, how can I know it is getting to the wrong place?

I feel frustrated since I bought it 2 two days ago...

Don't know if this is the same problem as yours, but I have experienced often such problems with my computer when I started the scanner after my PC was started. At contrary, if I start the scanner, let it finish its calibration cycle (no more flashing of the led) and then the computer, everything is okay. May have something to do with Firewire chip of the firewire interface of your computer ... or micro$oft :bang: ...

I had a similar problem with mine. Guy who sold it do me had it working perfectly but it had the same symptoms you describe. It went to Nikon and it was the transport. Since coming back, works perfectly.

Not sure if this is the issue. Anyway, I bought a Nikon 8000ED from ebay. After I got it and hooked it up, Nikon Scan software kept giving me an error about not recognizing the film holder. I even tried it on Silverfast and Vuescan. Both Silverfast and Vuescan gives an error about not detecting a film holder. I opened it up and took the light module. I noticed that the 45-degree mirror between the light source and the CCD sensor was really dirty. Using my lens cleaner, I carefully cleaned the mirror up and the scanner is working again.

BTW, my scanner has started working again (was living under my bed for several months and must have repaired itself somehow...).

It still throws up an error if I start it up with the film door open rather than closed, but if I wait until after the self check and then open the door it all works fine.

Ironically in the past it threw up an error message unless I did the opposite....
