Hi, I have two unrelated questions.

1.) I have an S2 I bought a few weeks ago. The shutter speed dial (fast speeds) has some "give" to it: once the frame is advanced/shutter cocked, sometimes the arrow doesn't line up correctly with the speed. Usually if I turn the dial it will line up, but I'm guessing this isn't a Good Thing. I handed it in for repair and the shop said a screw was replaced fixing the problem, but it has quickly popped up again.

It can be a problem around 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500 since the numbers are so close to each other :( I don't have another Nikon RF to compare it to - is this behavior normal?

2.) I'm looking for a rear cap for the Nikkor 50/2. Camera shops to told me to forget about it, and I did find an original one but it was around $150  Are there any 3rd party options?

Go on Ebay, some good third party caps very cheap- made of aluminum. Look for those for Contax RF lenses.

You can also use the childproof caps of some medicine bottles.

As to the shutter speed dial, it sounds like another trip to the shop is in order.

I bought a rear cap here recently for my 50/1.4 for about 1000JPY. They are not that expensive.

Try unscrewing the setscrew that holds the tension on the shutter speed dial, get the grease or oil off the male/female threads w/ any degreaser (ex. alcohol) on a Q-tip, put a drop of Loctite (blue) on the male threads and screw it back in. Let it sit for 24 hours and see if that fixes it. Good luck!

Ditto on the HeavyStar stuff........

Thanks for the advice everyone. I may go the DIY route for the rear-cap :D

As for repair, I think I'll wait a little. I assume that the give in the speed dial is not good, and repeated shifting will eventually wear (a) certain part(s) down. I will consult my trusted dealer and see if they can find a good repair place for me. In the meantime, I probably won't use my S2.

I have very minor experience fixing cameras, so I'm not sure if I want to attempt any repairs myself.

Kodak film canister caps fit the millennium nikkor perfectly. The hansa caps are okay, but the Zeiss 50/1.5 Cosina cap is the best.
