Do we ever leave the theatre?

Simon, this is not new and demonstrates all my age! But if you find it (DVD should be available) i suggest you "Blow Up" by Michelangelo Antonioni and the more recent "untill the end of the world" by Wim Wenders, just as a relaxing exercise about...

That's quite obvious - we leave theatre when show is over. When we have seen all the movies and realize this. Not rational to stay any longer.

The real question is if we are playing or watching the play. Funny thing is, the closer you watch, the more you change the play (Einstein) and the more fuzzy it becomes (Heisenberg). Provided there is anybody in the theater, of course - which, from the outside of the theater, you'll never know for sure (Schroedinger).

I think that for us photographers, media theories and for example Jean Baudrillard's theory of simulation are quite interesting.

So without any further elaboration: is there a factual global reality that we live in or is our reality just a medial construct produced by our very selves?
Also, do we control the media at our disposal or is it the media that define us as human beings?

Remember that 'media' includes more than just electronic and general journalistic devices, for example more basic means (or conditions) of communication, like air.

I'm aware that there is no ultimate answer to this question. 😉

(And please, feel free to recommend movies dealing with this field, they're kind of on both ends of the food chain here 😀 - I have already seen Matrix, Inception and 13th floor for example).

I'm right there with you...likeminded, yet far away. I'll write more in a few, I'm out the door after getting my M6 back from a CLA and need to test it haha, that said...another few films to check : 12 Monkeys, and Being John Malkovich...I'll also add to that list later.

Great movie recommendations, especially Blowup. I would certainly add Blade Runner. This thread runs the risk of becoming consciousness 101. Maybe there's a better course you could take in Berlin. David Lodge, the comic English novelist, wrote a book entitled "Thinks..." which deals with a lot of consciousness theory in an ingenious and amusing way. Within theories of consciousness is the concept of qualia, the innate reactions that you have that cannot necessarily be mimicked or programmed. It was these that were given to the replicants in Blade Runner to make them more authentic. Your recent thread on gestic quotation might have been derived from some subtle corruption intended or unintended by an outside agent, but more likely is indeed a unique and subtle perception of the world, born of your talent and interest and experience, strongly suggesting that you exist and are real.

Someone suggested it above but no one else kept commenting - the movie Waking Life is pretty cool and is kinda along the same lines here.

As far as my personal opinion goes - I am going to play the Sartre card and say that I come before essence so I define myself and express my definition of myself via media.

how can you meet and communicate with real people without media (media as not just technological tools)? without means of communication?
we cannot see the difference between something and its picture, because what see is something's picture.


- thanks for all the recommendations, I have seen 12 monkeys, blade runner and being john malkovich of course. I have also read a lot of Hermann Hesse's work (Steppenwolf, Narziß und Goldmund, Siddhartha, Unterm Rad, Roßhalde, ...) and do read Nietzsche, Barthes, Benjamin and the like for my studies anyway. will try and check out the rest of your suggestions! thanks again!
