Epson F-3200 opinions?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting an Epson F-3200, only available now 2nd hand of course, how do they stand up compared to modern scanners?

Things I like about it....

It does 120 (essential for me), if I just wanted 35mm, I probably would get something else.

It's small compared to a flatbed (I have limited desk space).

It's cheap compared to a new V700 or something like that.

or would I be better off with a modern flatbed?

If I remember correctly, Tommy Oshima on flickr uses this scanner and the results speak for themselves. Also, a friend of mine, shooting only Hasselblad, scans all his 120 film with this scanner and the quality of the scans was sufficient enough for publication.

I have one packed away for now.

Very quick and easy to use. But the film holders have antinewton PLASTIC which shows a subtle grain from the plastic in your scans. Its OK for medium format and 4x5 but not much good for 135 film. If you only want to do medium format then a minolta or nikon would be much better. The V700 is probably better too but I have no direct comparison to make.

But if you want it for scan for web and occasional print then it should be fine. Just make sure the film holder antinewton plastic is not scratched before buying cos you'll never get a replacement.

If shopping used, include the Epson 4990. I used one that belonged to a friend and the medium format (6x7 & 6x6) scans were very good.

Using the 3170 that has the same film holder.
You can just remove the plastic if you want to (and replace it with ANR glas).
Or use the neg holder from the v5/600.

It's ok for medium format for web and 8x12 prints (from 6x9 negs 🙂.

I've just bought a Canon 9000F, so will see how that goes, saw some *very* good results from it on Flickr, and it's cheaper new than the F3200 is 2nd hand...
