I'm curious what soup, if any, folks have used successfully with stand or semi-stand development. I wondering also what film stocks you've used. I've had nice results with Rodinal and various Neopan stock as well as with Kodak 400CN. Are there any other developers that area susceptible to stand development???

Why you ask? I'm lazy. I hate agitation. My agitating technique stinks (I get streaking from sprocket perfs regularly). And, I think that stand has been, for me anyway, relatively idiot-proof.

If you've had good results with other developers, please share tips and secrets here. I'm assuming if no one is doing this with developers besides Rodinal and similar compounds (Adonal, etc.) that there must be some chemical reason why, so if that's the case, please share that info, too.

Most of the streaking 'from sprocket holes' that I've seen is in fact due to too little agitation.

That being said, I've done 1 hour stand development in XTOL 1:3. I did it with TMZ. It didn't appear to do anything magical, some compensation on the highlights, and was grainier than XTOL 1:1. However it did develop the film to a higher contrast in the midtones and shadows than development for EI 3200 in XTOL 1:1 with normal agitation. I don't have a densitometer so I don't have any examples of what it really did to the curve. I got some streaking in the stand stuff, especially at EIs lower than 3200. I'd say somewhere around EI 3200-4000 would be good, but honestly, it didn't look any better than normal dev at 1:1. I might play around with it more at some point...

HC110

Love Neopan400/APX100/Acros/EFKE25 in Rodinal stand
TriX - not so much.

So I used HC110 stand with TriX for a while.
Then I switched to Neopan400 which I liked better, and so that I could use Rodinal again.

Now Neopan400 is disappearing and I might have to back to TriX...

...or too much liquid, to the point where agitation doesn't really move anything around. I stopped having issues once I started using a tank twice as large as the film and only filling it half way. I do slow inversions though so that may help with respect to bubbles and other issues which this could cause.

HC-110: I use Ansel's semi-stand and I do it with TriX. I never had uneven development as I've had many times with Rodinal.

What dilution HC110?

I've used Ilford LC29 at 1+100. Agree the earlier comments about lack of agitation causing the streaking. I've had excellent results with times in the 20-30 minutre range and normal agitation (4 inversions) every 5 minutes.

Having quite good results from 510 Pyro diluted 1+500 (yes 500). 1 min initial, 30 seconds agitation at the 30 minute mark, 1 hour overall. Seems to work with anything.

Example with TriX:

What dilution HC110?

  • 1:100
  • 60 minutes
  • 5 slow inversions over first seconds
  • tap to eliminate bubbles
  • stand

In contrast to Rodinal, I have had no problems with uneven development with 120 film in a 500ml tank. I don't do an inversion after 30 min as I do with Rodinal.
Never had problems with 35 film for either.
Like Rodinal look a bit better for 100 film (acros/max/foma), still need to try the hc110/rodinal mix

Microphen semi-stand. 80-90ml fresh stock + 210-220ml water at ~19 Celsius per film (so that I'm roughly at ~20 Celsius with the mixture). Five inversions at start, tap to eliminate bubbles. 5 inversions and taps at 20 and 40 minute marks. I do this to push Trix, Neopan 400 and HP5+ to 800 ASA... Seems to work alright, but still experimenting...
