Tunnels of streets from the First and Second temple periods have been excavated in tunnels abutting the Western Wall and the Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

The closest point of the tunnels to the Holy of Holies (the centre of the Temple where the Ark of the Covenant was kept) has become an impromptu synagogue.
