Photos taken with the X100 during SXSW in Austin, TX

Lots of real catchy pics here, and overall top notch album! The journey was a pleasure. Rock and Roll will never die! >S<

And it shows the X100 from its strongest side I might add.

It is a real pleasure to see more than 2 or 3 images on the same subject, with the desire to build a "sum" made with X-100... and there's some great pictures here!

I'm not completely seducted by this portfolio: too many differences in treatment in colour and BW, and IMHO the editing is too open ...

But I like the idea that you can finally see the X-100 "at work", in a real context for photography : congratulations!
 
Great photos man - looks like such a cool event. Sometimes I'm pretty jelly of you Americans and your cool festivals.

x100 quality looks fantastic - very natural and solid.

I have no problems with the different tones, processes, etc used. I think the notion that a body of work needs to all look the same is antiquated. Good stuff especially when the thread was about showing the X100 IQ and not on building the perfect portfolio.
 
jsrockit, I agree with you that it's strange to be commenting on this as a "portfolio" when it's a series of pictures intended to show the capability of the X100. The question is, what do these pictures tell us about the camera?

Presumably these are all JPGs out of the camera with little or no post-processing. To me the colors look good and film-like; the focus has often been missed in the tumult of the event; the B&Ws are okay. I'm not sure what the situaton is on dynamic range and on resolution and rendering of textures, which I assume will be better from processed RAW files. I'd be interested what other people conclude from these pictiures.

Fair assessment and perhaps I should have given the set a bit more of a preface.

To your point on the differences in treatment, theses are a collection of images taken at different times , different venues and for different audiences. They were not shot with the intention of collecting one group of images that would be treated the same. Not sure what a criticism of "open" editing is but would like to understand.

And to address the editing, like my x1 vs x100 shootout, these are edited in Alien Skin Exposure 3, this time from camera JPEGS. I am looking forward to going back to play with the RAW files once proper support is available. I rarely if ever shoot OOC JPEGS so this was a new experience.

Overall, the X100 is a mighty little package. It has its quirks but nothing so off-putting or that won't be addressed in a firmware update. The simple fact that I could capture these images, many in challenging light with fast movement, is a testament to its worth.

That's ok, I have a thick skin. But I am curious about your comment regarding focus as I thought the focus was nailed on every shot with a clear subject. Some of the crowd stuff is more loose of course. Am I missing something?

The X100 does have a tendency to focus on higher contrast backgrounds behind your main subject if your subject is close to the minimum focus distance. You can correct for this by switching to EVF mode though and I filtered out any duds where focus was missed.

There has been a lot of mixed reviews on battery life and autofocus. Can you chime in with your experience on those topics?

I'm not so sure it's about showing the cameras capabilities either...

To me these were just some photos taken with the X100 (a camera I'm interested in owning). I don't see anything alarming in the photos as far as negatives go, so that was that for me.

BTW, nice set. It's always good to see someone taking pictures that demonstrate the capabilities of the camera. I especially like the low light ones...

Hey Jeff.

On day oneI burned through 3 batteries, however I was shooting from noon till 1am and I was using a Fuji Pivi mobile printer during the day to make on the spot Instax prints. Subsequent days I usually went through one and a half batteries which I thought was great. I mostly use the OVF and don't review images on the LCD that often but do have image review set to 1.5 sec, so the EVF pops on briefly after every shot. I imagine you would get even better life without the review on.

In general I think there are several ways Fuji can improve the interface so that you don't have to use the EVF or LCD as much when making common menu selections such as ND filter and Macro. Since you can change ISO in the OVF and there are display elements for ND and Macro, I don't understand why Fuji pushes the user out of the OVF to make a menu selection for those two items.

AF - What are the complaints? I find it fast and accurate with the caveat that I explained in a post reply to Mitch above...

Chad, I have to confessed that I looked at your series as a flickr slideshow and did not have to time to examine the pictures more closely. Possibly, what I thought was out-of-focus was merely subject or camera motion relative, since these pictures were taken "on the go". In fact, I generallt like a "looser" style, as you can see from the series under my signature below.

I think that your pictures show this to be an interesting camera. Many people are looking for very high resolution and fine tone gardation from these digital camera: people seem to want a look that with film was acheived only in medium format. As for me, I prefer the "35mm aesthetic", as typified by Tri-X. Your pictures seem to have that.
