Having a digital camera that can go to 25600 ISO is a little like having a car with a top speed way beyond the open road limit ... sooner or later you're going to have to take it there just to see if it can do it!

These pics were taken at Carol's place this Sunday morning using the cheap and cheerful plastic fantastic 35mm f2 AFD Nikkor.

They are noisy and there is some banding here and there ... but, what an amazing camera the D700 is!

Wow, those have a really cool look to them. You're not being very helpful as lately I've been trying to NOT buy myself this camera.

Mine seems to be stuck on 200. I used to be a fan of Kodachrome 25 so 200 seems plenty fast to me. I also have a really nice CF tripod, the best film speed increaser in the world.

All said and done, You have done a really good job and the noise seems to lend an atmosphere to the photos made of everyday common objects.

I just may get out the instruction book and figure out how to turn it up.

Well, after hearing so much about the great high ISO image quality of this camera, it is interesting to see these images. Granted it's 25600, and it's remarkable to be able to shoot at all that that ISO, but these images certainly show the camera's limitations.

Yea, that is some limitation. I wonder what colour film pushed to 25600 would look like in comparison. It makes me want to see how much better sensors can become several generations from now.

Thanks, never ran mine that high. Just was not curious enough and never had a need to go over 3200. How is the 35/2 AFD at holding up it's end of the bargain?

Weird noise artifacts here.

Probably not so weird when printed. The rest is quite ok.

Edit: M8 at 2500 does not look so good.

These files when desaturated allow you to concentrate on the luminance noise and then apply some more USM for pretty decent black and whites considering the ISO.

Like I said in my first post this is not really practical photography but more an exercise in seeing what the D700 does at it's highest ISO setting.

After all we don't drive our cars flat out ... do we? :p

Keith, I've only used mine 3 or 4 times at 6400 and it's outstanding. I'll get to 12800 and 25600 sometime soon just to see. Your pictures all in all are very good, a testament to this great camera.

Keep in mind these would clean up a LOT with current adobe camera raw noise reduction without impacting detail...

Thanks Keith for demonstrating what this camera can do in extremis. I have just dragged out my 2 Lunasixes and cranked up the ISO too 25k/45 DIN, and by dim evening window light I metered EV 12, which gave me F/5.6 @ 1/125th. I`m flat out reading the newspaper in that light ! I reset the meter too 400 ISO/27 DIN and I get 2 secs @ F/5.6. It would mean being able to get that shot in the darkened church and not having to use mood killing flash. I like that you are using the latest technology to photograph an old Queensland farm house, complete with cast iron bath , wash stand jug and basin. I also have that kettle, a hand me down from my grandmother.
