Hmmm. Where am I from? That requires a bit of interpretation. I'm currently living, working and posting in/from Sydney in New South Wales, so that's what I voted. But I was born in Brisbane, grew up in a military family - so was all over the place (in Oz, and o/s) - and have since lived in lots of other places as well before (sort of) settling in Sydney. Most of the last couple of years I've been a "displaced person" in Brisbane and Melbourne - an economic refugee from the Great effing Global Financial Crisis, only recently come home (I hope I can stay).

Adelaidian, born and bred but like most Aussies (and especially Kiwis) I did my stint OS, about 7 years all up. But never really wanted to live anywhere else except Adelaide. I know plenty of interstaters think our city is dull and boring to which our usual reply is "thanks for the compliment." I reckon all up there's about 10 to 12 RFF's in South Oz.

I was going to say ex-Pom, but then I remembered that I am still one. I have a mental block when it comes to all things relating to ceremonies. I have only been in the country 42 years.

In geography, the antipodes of any place on Earth is its antipodal point; that is, the region on the Earth's surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points which are antipodal to one another are connected by a straight line through the centre of the Earth.

So this means that we (Oz and NZ) can only be the Antipodes to the region that is directly opposite us through the earth's centre ... wherever that may be?

I think I know why, but am not 100% sure, so I'll throw the question out there ... why is it that Aussies and Kiwis are know collectively as antipodeans?

NZ is the antipode of England - it is opposite on the globe

EDIT: Wait, no, I am wrong, NZ's antipode is Spain (I was close-ish though...)

True that, the expression (I have never heard of it myself) is probably quite old, dating back to the British Empire maybe?

Also, here is an interesting quote from that most wonderful of crowd sourced encyclopaedias - "Gibraltar is approximately antipodal to Te Arai Beach about 85 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. This illustrates the old bromide that the sun never sets on the British Empire, however the sun still does not set on the British Commonwealth."
