UK Region RFF EuroMeet 2011, London

I can't make it, but I hope you all have a great time, with special greetings to our visitors from overseas. London is a fantastic place for photography and I trust that the light will be kind to you.

It is probably not on your agenda but I was on the London Eye at the weekend with a Rolleiflex and it has it's own unique look, plus great views. Buying tickets online is quicker and the queue was about 15 minutes.

Have a great time swapping stories and comparing cameras :)

You know really, if you want some interesting places to shoot, you should head to Brixton. Or the East, and stay away from the tourist traps.

Actually, I agree with Larky haha!

Btw think I can come on the Saturday now but I'd do just one day so either Sat or Sun. HMMMMM.

Sara, Larky,

Ok, there's time to change things. Where do you want to go and when?

The Google map for the meet is here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=213275850894843983770.000499a47c42738aaa98f

Add whatever you want to it (just don't modify anything already there).

Whatever you plan, make sure it can handle 20-35 people, who don't know the area and just need a general direction to travel and meet up at the end (we will not be in one big horde). Remember that we _will_ all meet up at midday Paddington on Saturday at midday and 11am on Sunday at Liverpool St Station.

Let's get these changes made ASAP so people get the info before they travel out to London.

Remember: a place which is cool to go and shoot in on your own is not the same when there is a group. It changes, people react differently. e.g. I discounted Brixton for this reason.

This is odd, I responded, and it went up, and now it's not here. :s Maybe it's because of Star Wars day.

I think it's too late to change it now, but if people get bored on the first day we could help think of alternatives. Camden Market is good, little venice is nice if it's sunny. A group wont be noticed (unless we all have DSLR's and are taking close ups of the food being cooked, as I saw a couple of days ago). One thing which is good to do is choose start and end, give out maps with the main roads marked in red. Use the back roads, get the good shots.

Hope it stays sunny, and not windy. I don't like the wing, it makes me unhappy.

Cheers Larky,

Camden is a super tourist trap at the weekends. We're going through Little Venice already on the Saturday (it is the first place after Paddington).

What else do you have? Anything for Saturday after the pub at Notting Hill Gate? There will be some who want to carry on going into the night and the next morning, any suggestions for that?

Clapham is good, The Barbican is great for architecture and is situated in a fairly dead spot on a Sunday, so you can get great lone people shots against miserable looking high walls. The South Bank obviously, although it's a little touristy. Brixton is great for a small group, as long as you don't scare easily. In fact the walk from Battersea Park to Brixton is really good for 70's style shots, that's a perfect cheapo film walk, developed cheaply, and scanned cheaply. :)

Anywhere East is good, in fact anywhere not right in the middle apart from near Tower Bridge, which has some great places to shoot. Very new architecture near City Hall etc.

One thing to all people coming from abroad, I've noticed recently that I can take pictures of anything, including children, at very close range, if I don't have a big SLR and I smile and chat to people and am generally happy. It's got much better in the last 3-4 months, for reason I know not. So, be chilled and shoot away. :)

What to bring along, I will come light with a GS645 folder and a set of patches for the bellows.

I'm not bringing anything. I want to buy something. If I bring something, I wont need to buy something, and I want to buy something. :)

Kully is to blame.

only if they're nikon, so I can shove the lenses on my MDa.

kidding aside, no one cares what effin camera anyone shoots with. :)
Simon
What lens do you want?
I can bring just the lens... no cameras tough, to much RF's stuff already for one bag with underwear (thanks to easyjet) :bang: .

Hey Larky,

Thanks for that, the plan must have gotten lost in the preceeding pages of this thread. I'll update the first post so it's easier to find.

Here it is:

- Friday

Meeting outside Royal Festival Hall (riverside) at 10:30am. We'll then head to London Fields to meet up with Simon, Lisa, Andrew and his brother and have a look about and decide to go wherever the wind takes us, no plan. Picnic for lunch, I'll bring some wine and cheese, perhaps some bread. Bring something too if you are coming out. This will be a small group, just 8-9 of us.

- Saturday

10am at Somerset House. Some of us will meet this early for some snaps outside or a wander in for the free Bruce Davidson retrospective.

Midday at Paddington Station. This is the main meetup. We all head off to Trellick Tower along the canal through Little Venice.

From Trellick Tower we head down Portobello Road, exploring any side streets that take our fancy to Notting Hill Gate, to a pub for ale and a rest (I think we'll arrive here around 4-5pm). Check the Google Map, the route is marked out.

From here we head to Barbican/Highwalks, although we may decide to go somwhere else.

There will be plenty of stalls selling food along the way, so you don't need to go hungry.

Unfortunately, I won't be doing the normal bar/street drinking, running away from violence, staying up until there is absolutely nowhere to go but bed :( but I'm sure there will be some :)

- Sunday

Meet at Liverpool Street Station at 11am. Spitalfields, Brick Lane, and surrounds. There is a Bangladeshi festival going on as well as the usual stuff.

There is an amount of walking involved, remember to bring sensible shoes. I'll bring blister plasters and a bottle of cheap whisky for anyone who needs them.

Sound good?

I've just this second had a job offer, so although I'll be coming, it wont be for the full gig. OK, off to town to look for a lightbox.

Larky,

Commiserations to work during your holidays :(

Have you got any comments on the plan?

The plan sounds good. Ye, work during annual leave sucks, but freelance is freelance is money is M equipment and holidays and dancing girls. :)

Or, in reality, money is bills, council tax and fixing broken stuff.

But the plan sounds good. Basically, you know London well enough but for those who don't, walk around and be ready, there is always something going on. Look for the little spots of light, there are many. There are some really nice bits just around the corner from the Tate Moden, on the way to Borough Market. Borough MArket could be another good place to go, very packed, but great for busy shots. And you get dark bits then light bits then dark bits etc. Good food too.

How's Borough market after 5pm on a Saturday? Never been there that late, I presume it is dead?

At mine? I thought it was at yours? I made the arrangements you asked for, it's paid up in advance. It was 4 dancing men on greased poles you asked for yes?
