First Photos With Hexar AF & Yashica T4

Hello All, I must say I'm astounded by the Hexar, so far it's really living up to its reputation for sharpness and accurate focus.
Haven't got used to the limitations of shutter speed in bright light yet though... Can anyone tell me if the camera meters TTL if I add a 8 stop ND filter?

Yashica T4 has been less inspiring so far and I think i prefer the Mju II on balance.

It doesn't meter TTL, it uses the little (white I think) hole/window just to the right of the lens for metering.

If you use a 8 Stop ND filter just dial in something like -2 stops exposure comp and change the rest via ISO setting.

8 stop ND seems pretty extreme. I use a a -3 stop here in what is a very bright environment and find this perfect .

considering the Hexar goes for $600+ and the T4 for ~$200, I guess the difference in quality shouldn't be so shocking?

From what I've seen on FlickR, I like the T4 over both of those cameras-- but that's just me.

The Hexar goes for $350. The T4 was no slouch, but it is CERTAINLY not better than a hexar. You must be looking in the wrong places.

The Hexar goes for $350-500 these days. For $350, you'll need to pay attention to KEH and the classifieds here. $500 is what you would pay if you needed one in great condition, immediately.

I too sold my Yashica T4 but have kept my Hexar AF.

C'mon - these two cameras simply aren't in the same league. The lens on the T4 is a little Tessar - not, what is it, a planar on the Hexar? I own the oft-dissed Yashica T3. Love it. It's rumored that the T4 and T3 lenses are the same but that the T4 is crippled at 3.5, hence giving an "illusion" of being a sharper lens because it doesn't open wide to 2.8 because it can't. (I'll take the extra stop, thank you very much...) I paid $35 for a mint sample. Here's what I really like about it - 1. great Zeiss T*-coated Tessar, 2. NA Scope - yep, I use it and find it /very/ useful. 3. One of the few point-n-shoots that lets you delay the film advance motor. What a smart feature! The film doesn't advance until you release the button. Take your candid, unbeknownst to the subject... Point the camera at something else, release. Whirrrr. Motor goes off. This is why this is one of the few point-n-shoots that's a good street tool where the motor noise defeats the usefulness of others. Wouldn't mind owning a Hexar AF. $350 you say? That's a bargain if that price is accurate. Seems low.

...to debate Hexar vs T4, They are v different cameras but I just happened to have aquired both at the same time. My T4 is not in great condition which may be colouring my judgement a little.

Thanks for the guidance on ND filters - makes sense now!

I was really hoping for a bit more feedback about my photography but maybe I chose the wrong approach to get that!

I have bought three hexars before. The first for $240, the second for $120, and the third for $400 with extras that would have made it $350 without. The Yashica T4 was $2.99.
As far as preferring photos from the yashica... if you like loose snapshot style photos and overblown flash hipster shots then yes-- you will prefer the yashica on the flickr pages 😉
No in all seriousness though, it's a great camera with a sharp lens that is weather resistant and small... one that I would certainly own if there were no Stylus and Hexars in the world.

That is not right Nick. The two lenses are not the same. The T-3's lens has 4 elements in 4 groups. The T-4 has 4 elements in 3 groups.

It does not seem as though you have that many photos on your flickr page to give feedback to, but if I had to choose a favorite-- it would be "scarborough". Excellent shot!

Very kind, I like that image too. Boot's 200 iso film, developed and scanned to CD by Asda!

There's c100 shots on my Flickr now from a variety of different cameras. Only a few from the Hexar but maybe a few more after a trip to Whitby this weekend.

Thanks for clarifying... I did qualify it as a rumor (and was hesitant to mention)... don't like to perpetuate Internet rumors - even on such an arcane topic as this 🙂
