I just got my hands on this version of the 50mm Summicron.

I had this lens in the 90s and if I remember correctly, the original cap went over the hood (which was mounted backwards when not in use). I don;t like this.

I plan to use this lens without the hood for the most part and was wondering which Leica branded lens caps (not interested in generics at this point) would be best to use with this lens? There just seems to be many options and was hoping to find out which one has worked best for owners of this lens.

Thanks.

There are two types of Leica caps for this: the thinner metal ones with inner felt ring, and a deeper plastic one that says 42mm on the inside. I like the plastic one better. For the metal ones, I've only seen original chrome ones and OEM black ones.

That being said, the rigid 2 does benefit from a hood.

Agreed. A B+W 39mm UV-MRC filter is the best lens cap going. You never have to remember to remove it. You won't loose it either. I have found all of mine from members of this Forum for about the same, or less, than the cost of a real Leitz cap.
All of my OEM caps are safe at home.

Anyone have a pic of these?

John,

I own one of the chrome versions that came with my Rigid. Its like the one that comes on 50 Elmars with the Retro Leica logo.

As an alternative hood I use to use a 50 Elmar hood on my Rigid, but it will vignette if used with a filter. I have a 12585 vented hood to use with filters, and I also own the cap that is used with the 12585 hood that annoys you.

Let me know if you want to check them out. The Elmar hood BTW is very low key and comes across as almost hoodless. A good choice if you don't use any filters. Also the metal cap works with and without the Elmar hood. Both hood and cap I own are chrome BTW.

Wayne, I sometimes use a lens cap to prevent burning a hole through my shutter curtain.

I've only had Bigfoot for about 5 years. I'm not yet tuned into that possibility. The Canon VI-T that I have owned since the 70s doesn't suffer from shutter curtain inflamation.

I'm not missing the point... I heard you about the filter. It kind of goes without saying. Soemtimes there is still use for a lens cap. Not everyone needs to do everything the same way.

Agreed. My bad. Do use the hood. 😉

I like to use the "pinch style" cap from he later Elmar 50 collapsible. Works well and is solid when affixed.
