50mm lens for the Leica CL (film)

Hey everyone.

I just got a Leica CL (film) it came with the 40mm Summicron lens but I'm also looking for a small 50mm lens that I can use with this. The Voigtlander 50mm f/2.2 Color-Skopar caught my eye because of it's small size, and also quite a bit cheaper than some other 50mm lenses. I noticed though that the rear element seems to protrudes quite a bit (at least in the pic), and I know that I can't use some lenses with the Leica CL because it might hit the light meter arm. Anybody here have used this particular lens with the CL?

If y'all have other suggestions for a small / relatively affordable 50mm lens that works with the Leica CL?

That does seem a little risky. It might clear, but . . . What about another CV lens? Or a Russian Sonnar version?

All Voigtlander M lenses or Voigtlander LTM lenses with M adapter mount on any M camera body with zero clearance problems.

The Voigtlander 50/2.2 makes a good choice for the CL as its both very small and very sharp

I have used the commemorative 28mm f3.5 Rokkor LTM lens from Minolta on my CLE with zero issues. Even the meter works.
That lens protrudes quite a bit further than the Voigtlander lens.

You'll be fine as the head bartender also said.

The earlier Voigtlander Color Skopar 50mm f2.5 would also be a good choice. Excellent optics, very rugged construction (brass). For a Leica CL, you'd most likely prefer a compact lens, which the Skopar 50/2.5 is. The Leica Elmar 5cm in any of its variations would also be worth a look. The Canon 50mm f1.8 is also excellent and compact, much smaller than the more famous 1.4 version. And if you like Sonnar formula lenses, both the Canon 50mm f1.5 and the Nikkor-HC 5cm f2.0 have excellent optics, are compact, and probably can be had for a reasonable price.

I have a late CL and it resists mounting regular (non-CL) Leica lenses, even ones without clearance issues e.g. the Summicron 50mm IV. But it does take nicely the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 II Vintage. It's fairly compact for the focal length and the speed, and it makes for a neat little package with the CL. No clearance issues with the light meter either.

Thank you all for the excellent information here! Good to know that most lenses seem to be compatible with the CL then. Seems like most lenses except the retractable lenses should gave no clearance issues with the CL?

I've used a Jupiter-8 on my CL many times. I also own various other 50s including even a Konica M-mount version but it is tough to beat the Jupiter for its light weight and bargain price.
