Wow very impressive capturing a lot of feelings and personality of the subjects especially in the the 2nd & 3rd photos.
When I dl the larger size versions, I could see the expressions of the lady in white gazing at the little girl and the girl in turn noting that you are taking her picture.
I think you've captured the guys sole in the 3rd picture.

Now on to the big question, were you using film to shoot the 2nd and 3rd picture?
I particularly liked the colors in the 2nd capture.

Which cam did you use for each?

Thanks for the post.

I just checked out your link to more pictures in Hanoi.
Fantastic collection, so of course another question.

The people appear to be comfortable and relaxed with you taking their pictures. So are you in a group of tourists snapping away or are you just by yourself snapping away "looking like a tourist", so they're studying you as well?

Great pics. Love the Girl with the White Dress, although I'd back up to include a little more space..

Nice shots! I was there a few years ago, great place to do photography. Almost as good as the philippines where people actually love to get their picture taken :)

Thanks for the kind comments

All photos uploaded so far are taken with Leica M8.2, 28mm Summicron at 320 iso. I went back to the M8 because I liked the colours, and it is more of a film look, but I also post process these in a similar way (depending on image) to emphasise that.

I shan't be able to upload the film shots for a while, as I'm still in Asia and only use my trusted lab in London. All film, by the way, is the new Kodak 400 Portra which I really like and scans very well. 2 films are pushed to 1600 and 800 which i shall be interested to see.

On the other questions, I always travel alone these days, rather than as part of group, mainly as it means I can photograph what I like when I like. Sometimes I go around with a local. I think I have developed something you might call a 'style' to my street photography in the past few years. Usually I do not ask permission to photograph, as I'm scared of losing the moment, but sometimes I do. On the other hand I don't try and hide the fact I am taking a photo so that there is a dynamic between the the subject and photographer. In other words I guess I seek permission by a look, sometimes a smile and by action. Usually I find this works. Especially in Asia (and Cuba), much less so in London.

I agree about Philippines and went there twice in the past two years. Will work on a book of those photos some time, as I shall with Myanmar which was also a great place for photography.

Unfortunately can't get to Saigon this time, but will do in the future and will take you up on your kind offer Hans, if you are still around.

I shall add more Hanoi images to the flickr set, and on the forum, over the next few days.

Thanks again for the comments and sorry for the rambling reply.

Nick
