Leica M8 & Fuji X-Pro1
Dear Forum members,
I would like to buy a used Leica 90 mm and I like to have some advice?
Schould I buy a used 90mm Tele-Elmarit F2.8 or a Summarit F2.5?
Please your experience and advice

The Tele-Elmarit is my favorite 90 if I don't need the extra stop from the Summicron. It's light, small, and sharp enough. You do need to use the dedicated hood - there were two provided, a collapsible rubber one and a metal one that also fits the 135. Both work well. I've never tried a Summarit, and as long as I don't lose the Tele-Elmarit, I probably won't.

Had a Tele-Elmarit and didn't like it. It was not sharp. Now the f2 Summicron is great. Heavy but amazingly sharp.

1. Big price difference. The tele-marit is softer but in the world of portraiture do you want a sharp lens. Consider this women prefer the softer lens because it is easier on the face and men prefer the sharper lens. I just completed a series for family and I need 2 lenses. (The tele-elmarit is great for stuffing in the camera bag and walking about.) Therefore but 2.

90mm Elmarit M's (with the sliding out hood) are maybe one of the best bargains. With a bit of luck you can find one for 5-600 EUR sometimes even less. I don't know why they are so " cheap" because it really is a very nice lens.

Some prices mentioned above are history. At this point, good tele elmarits (yellow 90 on the barrel), M-Elmarit, etc., are so expensive, that I would go for the 90/2.5 instead. Half a stop can be important.
Or get M-Hexanon 90/2.8, or Summicron v3 instead, they are still quite "affordable" for what you get.

Just a quick note on the T-elmarit.
Some are afflicted with an incurable etching caused by the cemented rear element. Use a penlight to inspect the lens paying close attention to the rear group.
So don't be convince by any seller that it can be easily remedied. It can't.
If you do find a clean one, you won't regret it. It truly is a wonderful lens to have in your bag.
Good luck!

My Elmarit-M is in the bag all the time, even though you can get smaller. It is sharp and it is difficult to take a bad photo with that lens. The Summarit is smaller, and I hate slide-out hoods, so I would seriously consider the Summarit.

The first 90/2.8 Elmarit has oodles of character. Sharp and smooth.
The last 90/2.8 Elmarit-M has oodles of chartacter too. Sharp and sharp. And smooth. Really sharp. Really smooth.

Wow. I just checked some prices of completed listings om ebay and the prices have gone way up. Bert I still would keep an eye on www.marktplaats.nl I have been lucky there over the years. Sometimes second hand Leica equipment seems to be cheaper in The Netherlands than elsewhere. Just got a pre asph 21/2.8 with hood and finder, perfectly mint but for a very ugly patch (5x5 mm) on the barrel where all paint was rubbed off for EUR 800.

+1 Konica Hexanon 90/2.8
I used a T-E for several years, now have a Hexanon 90/2.8 as my only 90. I prefer the Hex, which is an Ernostar design (Sonnar-like). Lovely bokeh, sharper than the T-E wide open, and much less expensive these days. If I were going to spend up a bit, I'd really like to try the Cron v3.

I love my 90/2.8 T-Elmarit. Great lens! I don't know why anyone thinks the lens isn't sharp... mine is sharp from 2.8 both on film and digital.

I had a tele-elmarit for a while, it's a surprisingly light and tiny lens and has great image quality. i sold it because i realised 90mm is too long for my taste. but for those who like 90mm it's a great buy!

No contest, IMO. I'd go for a used 2,8/90 Elmarit-M, or Tele-Elmarit.
Why? I have a 90 Elmarit M (late) and 75 Summarit and think the Summarit is of incredible optical quality and built like a tank. And small. Is the 90 that much worse than the 75?
With the price of 90 Elmarit-Ms now, a used 90 Summarit will be a fair bit cheaper.

Uhm... I really could not locate your ad for an Elmarit, Huub. In fact, I could not find any ads from you in the Classifieds
@Bert: there was an ad for a nice Summicron 90/2.0 Canada up on that Dutch site that might be in your budget as well?! Sent you a PM!

Had a 90 tele-elmarit and it flared like a bitch. Finally dumped it. Now i have a first version 90 Elmarit which I love and an 85F2 Nikkor ltm when Ineed the speed. For some reason My 90 tele flared really badly and I think it was uncharacteristicly bad.

Johan, correct, the ad was removed one or two days ago. I forgot I had it listed already for 15 days. The ad also had two Summarons which both were sold. I had a choice of two Elmarits for sale, regular first versions, a late, never used black one and a chrome one in good condition. If one would be sold, I would retract the other one, but there was no interest in them (or my prices were too high). I guess I'll try again later. With threads like these the popularity of the Elmarits will increase and who knows I might even make some profit
