Reading the English version of Zorki-4 manual, I have found a very interesting statement:"
It should be taken into consideration that any replacement of the standard camera lens calls for adjustment of the new lens to fit the camera. "In Fed-2 manual: "However, it must be taken into account that each change of the main lens is connected with the necessity of the subsequent adjustment of the lens to the camera."
How do you think about?🙂
Well, I started this thread because in practice, my Jupiter-9 is not interchangeable between my cameras. Mounting on most of my Zorkis, it gives rather acceptable than terrific results. Only one Zorki-1 camera can produce sharp close-ups wide open with it, and I found this camera and result by chance. (I have tried to shoot test pics with several cameras and I chose the best one.) However, my 50 mm lenses are interchangeable without any problem. So, I have bought an other Jupiter-9, suspecting that the former lens was defective, but the problem remained.😕

From about 2 meter distance, each of them works flawlessly, but taking close-ups is like a Russian roulette- sometimes succeeds, sometimes not.

I am eager for knowing your opinions and advices! 😉

That agrees with other manuals that I've seen translated.

You could shim all of your Zorki bodies to agree with each other. Paper shims were used under the lens mounts of the camera.

I remember my Russian friend who told me he had all of his lens adjusted to his one Fed 3. He told me that it was for better results.

It's not un-heard of for a Leica owner to have the body and lenses serviced together for the same reason - tolerances can add up to impair focus. If you have a body that is on one end of allowable tolerances, it might well have issues with other lenses, and I'd think the longer the lens the more apparent the potential issues.

You have the choice of adjusting the lens to fit a given body or adjusting the body to fit the lens. The reason for this is that the Soviet production process was too crude to produce components to the required precision. Hence they relied on shims to set up the camera and lens at the end of the process. I believe that this has led to many of the complaints about quality control.

Zeiss, Nikon, Canon, Tanack, many others use shims in the lens for the final critical focus with their RF lenses. Leica did not use them. I would rather have lens with shims in it to make adjustments. Adjusting Leica lenses is not fun.
