I just mixed up 5 L of Xtol in distilled water and the stuff is light green/yellow color and not clear. Is this normal, or should I ditch the stuff and get some new developer?

I'm not the great XTOL expert, but the last three 5l ones were clear fluid in the end. Theoretically you can test it, but then you never know how the solution would change over time. Maybe you have got some residue in the bucket where the solution was mixed.

Mine is always clear after the two parts are fully dissolved. Perhaps (a) it's not done dissolving or (b) somehow the proportions of A and B are off (packaging error?).

Hi,
a yellowish/brownish color is normal after dissolving part A of the powder. It should clear perfectly after part B is added. If it does not clear even after adding and dissolving part B I would guess that something is wrong. Also note that Part A has to be dissolved completely before part B is added. This will take some time at normal temperatures.

Hi all,
I wanted to give you update on this issue.
Few hours after I posted, it was still yellowish, but I didn't want to throw away all 5 liters without a fight and I developed the film clip. It turned out fine, maybe a bit too dark and I decided to go ahead with 3 films. Wish I didn't 😉 They all came out okish, but even as negs they looked not as I'm used to. After scanning them, it was clear that they were underdeveloped by stop, stop and a half 🙁((( I had a beach shot after sunset on a beautiful day and people kept asking if it was raining 🙂))))
One week later, I decided to make D76. After I mixed XTOL, I divided it into bottles and they were stored in the cupboard during this week. While the water fro D76 was getting heated up, I went to pour out XTOL from the bottles where I stored it. Without looking, I started pouring out 1,5 L bottle. I looked briefly in it's direction, and to my utter surprise, the fluid was completely clear!!!! I poured out approx. 1 L 🙂 Did the clip test, it came out fine, developed one film, it came out beautifully! So, somehow during this week, the whole lot got dissolved and developer was now fine. Now I just need to shoot more films and to develop them in my new-old XTOL.🙂)))
