As a shooting collector (hunter gatherer is my avatar's subscript :)) I started with an M4 and gradually added other Ms over time. In the last few years I'm slowly acquiring a taste for Barnacks. So at present my main interests here are classic Leica film rangefinder M's and Barnacks and their contemporary lenses. I have no interest in modern Voigtlanders or digital Ms, although that may change with time and funds ;)

Recognize this...?

Photographs
The "Philosophy of Photography" section
Digital Rangefinders
APS-C Compacts
Micro 4/3
Classic Rangefinders (though I don't own them anymore)
M Mount Lenses

While I do like gear and will talk about it, I'm not a collector at all. If I wasn't making photos, I wouldn't own gear.

Hard to say, really. Probably, it's interacting with (mostly) nice people, but it's also worth while trying to help those asking honest questions about kit they've never tried, reminding them that when someone else says THIS IS THE ANSWER TO ALL YOUR PROBLEMS, or THIS IS THE GREATEST, there are times when it isn't. And conversely, that when someone says THIS IS CRAP AND ONY AN IDIOT WOULD USE IT, there are times when they're wrong too.

Cheers,

R.

First reason I got here was the information. I share the passion of photography with many of you and even not being active in many threads I do read them (film threads mainly) and learn many things. The photos in the gallery sometimes are really spectacular as well. Saying that, I am avoiding the gear threads, I am not interesting in comparing lenses or digital/film cameras. I am happy to use the film cameras I have and I love shooting film. I admit the forum made me buy few M2's which I love so much, but also helped me to keep my Barnack which I love so much as well the R7 which I love so much :D
Lets shoot!

i originally came here to be among like minded folks who loved using rangefinder cameras.
i am ok talking about both film and digital rf cameras...it's the rf part that counts most for me.

i wish we were still the same as when we started as far as being about only rangefinders.

Over the last four years I have cycled through a lot of gear. Buying and selling online and putting the profit to use in buying gear I really liked has been my main game and I have acquired a lot of knowledge here (and on the internet in general for non-RF camera gear). It has helped me to earn a buck and decide what I wanted to get.

I'm past all that now. I've mostly found and bought what I want to use and at the same time buying & selling isn't that much fun anymore. The drive is gone and both eBay and its users have taken a turn for the worse.

Yet I am not leaving RFF. My main interests are:
  • keeping in touch with you wonderful people I have come to 'know' here over the years
  • providing others with info they seek (I'm trying to pay it forward)
  • The Sonnar LTM thread
  • The IIIc K thread
  • The Show your Leica M thread
  • All Rodinal stand and 1:100 threads
  • The Brian Sweeney lens hack forum
Also, RFF is the first (and only) forum I turn to on film, software, exotic lenses, scanning and stuff I forgot.

Come to think of it, it feels like the Cheers theme song lyrics :p here!

I'm not posting pictures to RFF anymore. The restrictions on the file size really tick me off. I'm in the process of recreating my own website and in the meanwhile load to Flickr and Facebook.

For me it's a great place to find useful info on a disappearing hobby. In spite of our best effort the pool of equipment we use gets smaller. The pool of hands-on knowledge gets to be less and less and less. I've only been back taking pictures about ten years now. Here at RFF it's no trick to find professionals and veteran amateur's(some with 30-40 years)willing and eager to share their love and experience using rangefinder cameras and lenses. The occasional grump aside, most of the folks here just want to help. IMO, it doesn't get much better.

I parallel Huubl: I am a photographer and collector who exhibits every year or so. My main interests are film rangefinders, and I "suffer" from liking classic Leica, Canon, and Nikon rangefinders as well as Voigtlander and current Leica M equipment. It is a sweet dilemma, but sometimes I think jonmanjiro (Nikkors and Only Nikkors) or Benny Ng (Mr. Canon) have an easier go of it. But so far, I like all three classic cameras equally. I also like my Hasselblads and Nikon F/F2/FM2 gear as well.

As for Barnacks, I again parallel HuubL as I am using them (and Canon bottom loaders), more and learning about them more as I use them. I am slower with them than my M cameras, but am also in no hurry, either.

What do I like most? Meeting fellow RFF folks all over the world, from here in Sacramento to Tokyo and Kyoto. Makes the world small, a good feeling. HuubL: hope we meet one day!

I guess first it is the people and their sharing of information.

I am not a RF fanatic. I have a MF RF that I like for its negative size. I guess I would say for its weight if I had ever had an SLR MF. I have a Kiev kit which gets little use. I am mostly an SLR man in 35mm. But I do like my XA for when I want a camera but in a small package. I have and sometimes use a P&S digital.

I like photography, but I guess another thing I like here is to live photography vicariously since I have precious little time to engage in it myself.

I find it endlessly fascinating in terms of the depth and breadth of knowledge available.
The pictures on display are a real inspiration and I fail to see anything quite like them on other sites.

I enjoy other people, their minds and hearts, and what they consider that's good for photographing...

I enjoy learning, and here there are people who know A LOT... And I mean much more than about lenses and cameras and image quality: they know a lot about what's important to express visually, and what's important to do to get image quality: usually it's not about the gear when you're doing fast street shooting.

And of course the great RFF humor...

Cheers,

Juan

Huh? What do you mean?

:D:D;):D

It’s the community, I think, with its richness of information, experiences, and viewpoints in the world of rangefinders.

the OM thread.

if I thought I had a real chance of getting a job after I graduate Id be in the M section casing out a lens to pair with an m2.

At first it was to learn more about lenses.
Then it was to learn more about how others were using the R-D1 and then the M8.

Now, I come to see what other photographers are working on. What other photographers are talking about. And to look at pretty pictures.

I have bought and sold so many cameras/lenses etc over the last 2 or 3 years trying to find what I truly love and this site has been the constant. Started with M8, so was interested mainly in that thread, then got an M6 to go along with M8, so the Leica M site was included along with the Film, Scanning etc, then got Mamiya 6 so the 120 RF thread was added, then sold the lot and got M9 so back to M8/M9 thread. Recently bought Fuji GF670 and Bessa I so 120 Folders was on my list. Lastly picked up a Canon P and so have added the Canon RF to my daily read. Recently was able to set up a darkroom again so have added that to my daily read as well. The constant through all of this though is the Classifieds. Love to see what is for sale, pricing etc, and love to see the reasons people are selling stuff. Wish the community was a little less regional sometimes though, restricting who can buy because of where they are based. All in all love this site, keep up the good work everyone.

I like RFF because it's filled with (mostly) like-minded people. It's fun to talk about gear, ogle at all the beautiful cameras and lenses in the "Let's see your Leica M" thread, look at all the wonderful pictures that people post, but what I like the most about RFF is the maturity of the members that post here. Most people seem to get along and respect each other. It's no fun to be a part of a forum where everybody is arguing.

I have mixed feelings about the non-RF section, though. I'll visit the m4/3 section every now and then, but I hope this forum doesn't keep on expanding for non-RF cameras. If that were to happen, I could definitely see a conflict of interest between the members.

I came here initially to learn about rangefinders. What I found was a great community of talented people who are very helpful and civil. The discussions here and the images posted every week have helped me greatly. I think I am a better photographer now than I was when I first joined.

This forum has helped me re-discover film and its qualities. As an aside, someone complimented me on the quality of my conversions in B&W recently -. They couldn't believe I still used film.
