Camera / Develop Place in Jakarta

Hi RFFers, I have seen some post here that you have been or living in Jakarta. This is the first time for me to go back to Jakarta since starting film photography.

So I am interested to know the following:
1. Is there any interesting camera shop that still has old fiilm camera for sale or look at?
2. Any recommended place to have C-41 35mm processed?
3. Any place for black and white development?

I can say, that almost fuji image plaza/photo store still have 35mm film (at least fuji/kodak @iso200)
, but 120mm is getting rare here (only found kodak ektacolor)
they mostly process c41, but to find a good & reliable one, i don't have a clue as i don't live in Jakarta.
I believe some camera store still display old stuff, sometimes junk camera just for display only, if you want to really dig out you might ended up getting treasure out of them. And there is big market for those old/junk camera stuff which most of us is digging stuff on it, it's in Pasar Baru, just near to Monas (go north east), i believe some store overthere can do bw process/develop/print for you as well. They do fixing camera as well, but for leica/RF, I'd better fix my self.

last time I do windows shopping on those camera store, I got Pentax 85mm f1.8 mint for 65$ and a friend just offer me 265$ for it, what a great deal. As well as broken nikon F2 which i take the titanium curtains for my M2 for 40$, there are still a lot to be digged out bro.

+1 for Pasar Baru for used camera, film & digital.

C41 is still pretty common in Jakarta, though not all place do it well. Someplace are better and recommended, my friends spoke highly for Emerald Kemang, other prefer the cheaper lab in Pasar Minggu though I never used both of those lab since I always opt to process at my regular lab in Bandung.

B&W: I cannot recommend any lab for B&W processing, some people recommend Jakarta photo, in jl. Sabang, but the quality is not good. Emerald Kemang also could process B&W. The good thing is you can always process it on your own, cheap chemical are available, namely micro MF for developer and acifix for fixer. Ilford and kodak chemicals are also available.

BTW film selection in Indonesia are not good, we can only find superia's kodak colorplus, and lucky color for color C41. No slides since E6 lab is non existant here. And B&W the most common is chinese lucky BW, some store stock tri x and tmax but the price is a bit high. Fresh ilford's is hard to get.

Sounds like I should plan on bringing my own films, which I was already planning. Also, I did expect I will be bringing back the B&W negative.

Funny you mention Pasar Baru, that is actually where I hang out when I was growing out. Will definitely check it out.

I might try Jakarta Photo in Sabang since that is not too far from where I will be.

Here's my experience since starting to use film again in Jakarta last year.

I used to get my processing done at Adorama Menteng, tel 021 3193 4243, Jl Cokroaminoto 78, years ago. Going back to them last year, they did process colour film about once a week - whenever they had enough rolls to start up the machine. They scratched my negatives badly. Don't want to bother with them again for processing. Still very good for printing books designed at home.

Then I went to Jakarta Foto, tel 021 930 9233, Jl. H. Agus Salim 35A (Sabang), as I wanted to support a long-time business. For a couple of months they did a reasonable job of processing my black and white rolls. Some seemed poorly developed, but that could have been my exposure. The problem then became their scanning. The rubber wheels on their scanner left marks on the negatives that could not be removed. The rubber had deteriorated, and they said they would not be investing in repairing or buying a new one. They did try to fix my negatives, but it didn't work. They were kind enough to admit that they couldn't help, rather than the bluffing I often see here in Jakarta.

Now I take my film to Emerald Photography, tel 021 719 4454, Jl. Kemang Raya 90 B, which is further for me to travel. They do a much better job of processing black and white and colour than Jakarta Foto, though I expect it's also more expensive. They have a very limited range of film to sell. The only problem with their scanning is that they always try to correct any underexposure, which makes my intentional exposures at night look awful.

I've been through Pasar Baru a few times, looking at old cameras. There's a lot of junk, and I didn't find anything worthwhile buying. Capa Photo in Pasar Baru, Metro Atom Plaza, sold me lots of B&W film. I had to wait for them to order it and it wasn't cheap. They were very nice people.

Singapore is much much better for second hand gear. I would recommend:

agree with bogelgelbo , my friend recommend to try Emerald Kemang, but the price is a bit expensive.

Pasar Baru is the first place where indonesian looking for negative film (B/W and color)
they sell both fresh and expired films, and sometimes they got an expired slide (for LOMO).

I process my C41 with Emerald Kemang. Their machines are really dirty but if you have scanner with infrared dust reduction your film should scan just fine.

I'm curious. When I was in Malaysia in the 90's (was it really that long ago?) I shot a fair amount of 4x5. Then it was easy to get 35mm film, b+w and slides, but not pro stuff. I would go down to the Kodak importer in Petaling Jaya and buy anything I wanted straight from a big fridge at the back.
Does Jakarta still have Kodak or Fuji importers? Perhaps you could buy direct.

That's all gone now. I went back to the professional fuji place in Cideng last year, and it's no longer open. I went to Perth and Singapore to get a variety of film stock. Fridge is full now.

There seems to be lots of copy-pasted info on these forums which is very much out of date. I went there last year, and got several lists of places to process film. Then I spent several days telephoning and travelling around Jakarta looking up these places, and found that almost all of them were not longer operating or dealing with film. Sometimes those forums are a waste of time. It's good if they put you in contact with people who really know the changing film scene in Jakarta. Perhaps that recycled, but useless, information is just to attract people to items for sale.

In all this running around I went to JPC Kemang, the Leica dealer in Jakarta, who continue to sell Leica film cameras. I asked them where I could buy film, and the staff asked me - not joking - "What is film?" All this was done in Indonesian, so we were communicating properly. Instantly knew I was in the wrong place.

BTW, setelah libur ini, mungkin kita bisa bikini 'Jakarta meet up' untuk rangefinder user atau yang pakai film, kamera apa aja. Aku lagi sibuk, tapi nanti bisa. Yuk, jalan-jalan. Gimana menurut kalian?

@shane, salam kenal. I'd like to join your "jakarta meet up", but unlucky i'm in another island and rarely traveling to jakarta other than business purpose,which limit my hang around time.

Regarding forum, i know that in kaskus there are few, as you know that open forum sometimes drift the topic here and there so even for me it's hard to keep up,kind of wasting time seeing peoples talking out of topic or just show off their gears. For specific to rangefinder, I stick to fotografer.net/forum/rangefinder or this RFF, as we know we gain more knowledge as well as other user experience.

I believe there are comunities in jakarta which (i think) mostly shoot old camera/leica, one of them managed by an expat, Thomas (pd-jkt.com/jakarta photo distric), he sells some used leica stuff as well, directly from german to indonesia in his website, try to contact him if needed,i believe he know a lot of jakarta's photographic place. I once talk to him and got my first M2 thru him, a nice person in deed.

Regarding rare film stock, the best is to get directly fresh film from singapore store, amazon, or sometimes ebay.

@bwijaya, if you really want to survive here shooting only film, try to develop b&w yourself, try to get trusted lab for your c41 development, and get a decent scanner. What i hate about film is that some of the process I need to depend on someone else job. the more i have control of it, the better.

I'd forgotten about 'Thomas (pd-jkt.com/jakarta photo district)' so I visited that site too - turns out they are participating in the photo day walk soon, so I might go along to that. I haven't met him. Glad to see they're still active. My wife and I often go for walks to just take photos - it'd be fun if people want to join us.

2. Emerald kemang and matahari, like mentioned above
3. Emerald kemang, the only one that i knew still using ilford chemicals
