Summicron-C Nikon 39mm filters?

I read somewhere that Nikon 39mm filters fit the .75mm thread pitch of the summicron-c, but can anyone here confirm this?

Remember that Nikon 39mm filters are made for rear-mount for the mirror lenses and other lenses that have a filter drawer to use them internally. The glass is even with the rear of the threads. The threads themselves are standard Leica and they screw into Leica 39mm.

They are not the same thread as Leica filters. They are 39 x 0.75 and are kind of "backwards" in construction. I'll post a picture when I get the 40mm and the Nikon filter together.

The only quality source of "right way up" 39 x 0.75 filters I know is Heliopan. They are still in the catalogue. According to Ken Rockwell's site, some cheap brands incorrectly make filters threaded 39 x 0.75 instead of 39 x 0.5 (because larger filter sizes use a 0.75mm pitch) and of course these would be fine - if you can identify which brands have made this mistake, and if they are ground sufficiently flat. In practice, filters are not hard to make and unless they really are window glass, they probably won't degrade the image at all.

This is all you need to fit normal 39mm filters. A nice, well built ring adapter, based on the old Canadian series 5.5 ring.

That's a much better idea. Vignetting is unlikely - look at the depth of an old A36 lens hood for a 35mm Elmar, and a 40mm lens has a smaller FOV.

OK, here are the results of my testing.

The Nikon filter is not 39 x 0.5 - it will not screw into an E39 lens or the front of a B+W filter, or a SOOGZ. Lining it up against the Heliopan 39 x 0.75 (ES39) filter, the thread pitch looks the same but the thread is deeper and it will not screw into the ES39 filter or the Summicron-C either.

Basically, Nikon have used a unique thread for this filter (intended for the back of large telephoto lenses) and it doesn't fit a Summicron-C.

Your solution, therefore, is Series 5.5 filters, Heliopan 39 x 0.75 filters (both on eBay at the moment) or the Heavystar adapter ring. The latter is by far the easiest if you use filters a lot, but if you only use a UV and a yellow you might prefer the Heliopan option.

I have a set of odd Nikon filters. Never knew what they were for or from. They do screw onto the Cron-C with no problems. Not sure if we are talking of the same filters as a dealer told me the ones I have were for one of the enlarger lenses which seemed odd to me at the time.

I got these Nikon filters on eBay and they fit cron C pretty well. Test with a piece of paper revealed that filter doesn't touch the front element, the gap is minimal though.

These filters can be easily screwed on Summicron 40. At least my combination works fine. It's even possible to mount them on conventional lenses (cron 50, Color Skopar 25/4), about 1/4 turn only. Holds well but there is little need for this when filters 39x0.5 are available.

I made several shots of Nikon filter, compared to B+W F-PRO and original lens hood (see below). I didn't make any shooting tests yet so I don't really know if Nikon rear filters can be used in front of the lens... I hope yes for I got ND 2x, yellow, orange and UV - all are useful 🙂.
