I know you've probably all had enough of Vivian Maier by now, she's been a bit of a sensation as far as street photographers are concerned. But this weekend I managed to see some photos in the flesh, and my take on the exhibition, as well as my thoughts on whether she could be considered an all-time great can be found on my blog:

In conclusion, I think the individual photos stack up very well, but the 'big bang' of discovering 100,000 negatives at once makes it very hard to retrospectively describe a rich timeline of photographic habits, subjects and achievements. I think it will be very interesting to see how she is considered in five or 25 years time.

I grew up a few miles from the western boarder of Chicago in the 50's and early 60's. What I particularly appreciate about her work is the way that she captured the spirit of the city and its people that I knew as a child and as a young man.

Peter - yes, I suppose the images must have added impact for those who recognise the settings, especially if the scenes have changed greatly in the passing decades.

I have high hopes for the book, if fact I just placed an order with Amazon, even though the release date is three months away! Looking forward to it already.
