I sold a mint version 3, 35/2 about 6 months ago for $1000, now I cannot even find one for less than $1600, so what price I should be prepared to pay for a clean one now?

this is why many folks said that never sell your leica lens! btw for your reference, i recently sold combo M6 classic + 35/2 version III (mint+box) at $2,900. I'm afraid that you cant get it under $1,000

$1400-1600 is the going rate... fair or not, that's just how it is now. One was on the RFF ads for $1050 over the weekend and I'm sure it was snatched up in minutes.

I have recently bought Summicron 35/f2 v4 for $1400 (EXC) in Russia.
The guy that sold me the lens bought it a year ago for $1100.

I've paid for my V3 $1750 with mint condition, but no box on ebay.com. I think it's no fair price. Because I can find some lenses that was cheaper, but I want to pay for the trust.

Here is from my watch list at ebay. All summicrons are pre-asph 35/f2. Condition from BGN to MINT.
Winning bids (sorted by price):
$2275 v4
$2175 v4
$2055 v4
$2025 v4
$1875 v1 chrome
$1725 v4
$1525 v2
$1325 v3

Bought and sold v3 for $750 maybe two years ago. I have v4 and paid $1900--basically new in box made in Germany with all accessories.

I actually like the v3 better than v4, because of its lower contrast, and I am very upset at myself for letting mine go not too long ago. I guess I have to just shut up and pay the higher prices, to get another one, before the prices go any higher. I just hope we are not in a leica bubble, like the housing bubble, that will burst soon.

About two years ago, I bought an M6 with a v3 35mm Summicron for $2,100. At the time, the M6 was going for $1,300 and the V3 at $800.

It seems like the price of this lens has doubled in about one year, vow! Not sure I have seen such a climb for other lenses recently.

It's gone mad. I saw a rigid Summar go for 1250 GBP yesterday. I know it's rare and all that, but the front element was visibly scratched to oblivion.

Buy Zeiss or CV and wait for prices to come down; it's an M9 driven/production constrained bubble. I can't believe anyone is really buying a two grand lens for a cheap Micro 4/3 digicam.

Ken Rockwell's site (provocative as usual) suggests you should always buy Leica lenses because they are cheap compared to an M9 body. They are not cheap compared to an M3 body, not at the time KR wriote that and certainly not now.

Leica lenses are great but they're not four times better than a Zeiss.

From my collection: v4 $1200 NIB 2004, v3 $700 Ex+ 2004, v3 $800 NIB 2005. The boxed ones even have their warranty cards. The recent price run-up is insane.

Nutty stuff... bought a decent v3 on ebay with a few paint chips here and there on the barrel, but good glass for $911 in December '10. What a diff half a year makes.

It's funny how this subject gets me annoyed. I sold my V2 for $825 maybe two years ago, and I get angry when I see them going for $100 plus. Likewise my Elmar-M, sold for $500 and now they're $1000. It irritates me, to an irrational extent, not that I lost out, but that they seem such an unjustifiable price.

But it makes the 40mm Summicron, and the Zeiss M lenses, look like even more of a bargain. I don't like the bulkiness of the Zeiss 35mm, but I like what of seen of its rendering, even more than my old 35mm Summicron.

I can't get it when you were irritated. IMO it's quite normal the rule of the market: supply/demand and of course the affordability.

well, I think prices for leica lenses are going too crazy for me. This is why I decided to buy a 35 2.8 biogon! Really, I think the difference between all those 35 lenses (zeiss, voigtlander, compared to old leica lenses) when used with film is so small, that for me it is not worth anymore buying a leica lens for +1000€. A lot of you may argue with what I am saying...but that's just my opinion.
