Scott's photos from Antarctic

Thanks for the link ! I always wondered if somebody had taken any photos at that time and under these harsh conditions !
 
Sam Vinegar of Photorama used to say over and over, "Those great old photographs were taken by old lenses". Of course he had a table full of brass mounted lenses in front of him, but if you look at the work of many turn of the century (not this one) photographers there is a lot to be appreciated.

I used to buy and read old photo books, even various editions of "Making good pictures" by Kodak, and if it is a good shot, the equipment was hardly limiting the abilities of the photographer.

Seems we lost a very good photographer on that trip, Scott must have been a quick read in photography. Pity he never saw any of the finished work.

Shakleton's photographer on his aborted journey took some awesome photos as well.

Am working on the pieces now, have reservations through the third or so, you want to use the 12mm CV? We should plan on getting out somewhere to do some shooting of something besides iguanas ;-)

Computer acting up, we should get out some place a bit more rustic for a day or two -- in the villages there is plenty of opportunity for some interesting photos. I have the Iguanas covered already. ;-)

Am reserved now for the holidays, working on the pieces from exchanges, etc. I am thinking of letting some weeks expire on RCI, it is just too much messing around. Am reserved until Jan 3, but will extend as I pay for my 2012 stuff.

I was at an Exhibition of Ponting and Hurley's photographs from the expeditions in the Queens Gallery in Edinburgh. Very moving indeed !

I also saw Ponting and Hurleys original photographs from the Queens collection here in Christchurch recently, and anyone who has the opportunity to see this collection of work should make sure not to miss it! They are beautiful photographs which totally bely the conditions they were made in and equipment they were made with. I have a huge respect for those men.
 
A bit off topic - could anyone point some a really good book (a reading book, mind you), about Scott's expedition? Perhaps Shackleton's as well? (Or Antarctica in general?) Many thanks!
