A recent thread in the Fixed Lens RF forum inquired about the performance of the Yashica Electro 35 CC at f/1.8 (wide open). Last weekend I shot an entire roll of Kodak BW400CN at f/1.8 with one of my CC's in an effort to see how my copy performs. Here's a few pictures from the roll. Overall, I'm pleased with the results.

It should be noted that I used a Y2 filter on all shots and that I have done some slight cropping and other adjustments (i.e. very mild sharpening).

Thanks for your positive feedback stratcat! My primary intention was to demonstrate the CC's lens performance @ f/1.8. That said, it sure was nice to wake up and read your generous comments.

Cheers! Dave

- Constructive criticism about lens performance or the photos themselves are welcome to :D.

It's always nice to know just what the limitations are on a particular lens. And your wonderful shots look great on that BW400CN. The candyshop photo is just priceless.

Would liked to have seen a comparison version of one of the shots that wasn't manipulated (sharpened) to get a truer sense of what the Yashinon would do. I wonder if it has changed the OOF areas enough to make them look smudged a bit.

Cute Kid! I like the motorcycle frame the best but all came out great.

The CC is a sweet little shooter. One thing to be careful of is the diaphragm shape. It has 2 funny V shaped blades that sometimes can leave a diamond shaped veil or highlights when stopped down a bit.

Thanks for your comments! Here's a couple shots that have not been manipulated for comparison. Let me know what you think.

Had to include the thumbnail of this second one - can't upload to flickr right now.

Pretty distracting effect, but I was shooting into the sun. Darn good metering, if you ask me.
I like this camera and haven't used it in a while. Time to change that!

Wow! That is some interesting lens flare! I'll be sure to watch out for that. Thanks dboxer/f16sunshine.

I think they take good pictures but the price on them is crazy considering the GSN/GT/GS etc take better photos in a much larger package.

Thanks for your comments Field. Here's a few reasons why I prefer my Electro 35 CC over my Electro 35 GTN:

Wider lens (35mm)
Smaller, lighter body
No "Pad of Death" issue
Currently available batteries
"Above the Lens" CDS meter

As far as the GSN/GT/GS etc. taking better photos - I haven't heard that before?

On a side note, I bought my first Electro 35 CC (the one that took these pictures) for $51.88 (including shipping) off the big auction site about a year ago. Not to shabby.

I like the CC a lot, so I recently picked up a second copy brand new in the box for $199. Still seems pretty reasonable to me for "New Old Stock".

Apart from the odd shaped diaphragm and narrow aperture ring I really love the CC. Of my whole yashica collection I feel as if the meter on the CC is the most trustworthy. Just seems to be on the money every time but can't say if that's due to simply having a good example or if it's a trait if that particular model.
I do prefer my GX a little more though.

Dave S., that's a nice demonstration of the lens and also great pictures. I, too, like the candy shop photo.

dboxer, thanks for the "pagoda" flare demo. That is surprising.

Don't really see much difference Dave, but then they are not side-by-side either. I was expecting a different type of OOF field, but after seeing the shot demonstrating the diaphram shape, I can see why it looks the way it does. It's just different.

Great pics. Solid camera - truly a "poor man's Leica" and quite a bargain given its specs, lens, and build quality. This camera has a radioactive lens... Not that that matters but it's not often mentioned in "lenses that are radioactive" discussions...

If only they had incorprated aperture blades instead of the dual function of the shutter/aperture blades it has now. Not only the 1/250s issue would have been solved, the "angels" would fly somewhere else too...
