Summicron 50mm F/2 , Price??

bumping this thread. was on google, looking for current prices of the lens (50mm summicron, f/2 ver. 4 - with the tiger claw, w/o the built in hood)

i came across this thread, and it seems to me, that over the past 5 years, the prices of lenses have in some cases doubled.

as for the lens i'm looking for, buying the NEW version is 2,000 USD. does anybody know what the price for the ver. 4, of course used, price would be?

I've been browsing around on ebay, and it seems to be rated at about 1,500 USD. this is obviously overpriced, right?

Well there is a used v3 in the classifieds for $1100, so "doubled" seems pretty accurate. Still overpriced, though.

yeah, i saw that just a second ago. is there a shortage of new leica lenses? b&h are pretty much out of stock, so do you think that is what's driving up prices in the used market for the leica lenses?

I've been looking around a bit and it seems that a used, but decent 50mm 'cron could be had for €800-900 and Konica 50/2 M-Hex at about €700. A new Zeiss ZM Planar (with warranty) would be a bit less.

For my own purposes, I have basically concluded that a modern 50mm f/2 double gauss lens is one of the worst buys in the rangefinder game. You can get a very nice manual focus SLR 50 f/2, or indeed, f/1.4 PLUS a camera body for half the money. On a rangefinder, a collapsible Elmar/Tessar/Heliar would make a lot of sense. Or Sonnar type lenses for their signature. Or just about anything f/1.5 and faster.
I understand that a 50/2 planar-type is supposedly an excellent compromise of speed, sharpness and size, but another way to put it is that this type of lenses is not very fast, not very compact and not really interesting optically.

I hope I haven't insulted anyone's views with my blasphemous ways - not trying to preach here, just thinking out aloud 🙂

Speaking of Leica prices... when I paid in 2007 $1,100 for summicron 35mm V4 in chrome, made in Germany I was asking myself if it wasn't too much (and I was told it was too much). later same year i paid 540 EUR for mint late model Summicron 50mm and 599 EUR for latest Elmarit M 90mm 2.8

at today prices I would not even dear looking at those lenses...

Leica M5, Summicron 50mm f/2 v4 chrome, Agfa Fliegerfilm.

Weird; I thought I was the only one that thought this... Heck, I've got a Gaussian M42 setup that cost $20. To each their own, but I won't be buying a Summicron for quite awhile, given their prices.
