Hi, last monday i did some bargain and amongst other stuff i got an m5 a lttle battered but ok!
The worst thing is that to my surprise i didn´t find it THAT large and felt it really great for actual shooting!!!
The speed dial is far better than the other M´s!!!
Am i wrong or what!!!!
How may of you really love your m5´s????

It's the best!
For me the shutter dial and button are in the perfect location.
Combine that with speed display in the vf and "spot" meter. It's great. Is it as pretty as an m3? Maybe not

you're right! the m5 is a terrific camera, though an acquired taste.

Desperate but not serious
AS long as it's not an early M5, you made the right choice.

I'm a big fan, too.
I really like the ratcheted rewinding functionality.

I too think its the best Leica M. Having tried some other models - M5 is the only one I still have.

The best camera is one that still works!
I miss the one I had ... and it's the only M I've owned that I do actually regret parting with!

It's a great shooter. I take a camera and lens everywhere, more often then not the M5 (and 40/1.4 nokton) is the combo I take.

I purchased one after reading about it on one of the threads here on RFF. I like it a lot for all of the reasons given by other owners. The meter is excellent. I also have an M3 and a M2. Discussing the attributes of Leica M's is like discussing blondes and brunettes. Try them out and see which one you like. It's still all about the lens as far as I am concerned.

I think it's awesome. I can only afford to own one M, and so I have the M6, but I certainly prefer the meter in the M5.

Awesome camera, I shoot mine with 35 and 50 Summicrons. Also have 2 M7s, an M3 and an M9 - but the M5 is my favourite shooter!

best M ever made.

My M5s need red dots!
No, you're not wrong falling for an M5. About a year ago I got my first myself... a black one, that needed some urgent TLC from Sherry. Not long afterwards, I got another and now they're my favorite cameras. You'll find out... The meter is quite precise, and the camera handles most naturally. And forget about the film rewind crank slipping off your fingers and then having to rewind again... Not with an M5 because the crank is ratcheted. Why didn't the do the same with other M bodies? I guess the position made it somehow easier in the M5. Why took them so long to use a nice, large shutterspeed selector dial? Not until the M6TTL and the M7 did it come back.
You see?
Congratulations!

A very happy minority. Use your M5.

There was an issue with the shutter mechanism in early M5 models. There's a drum that cracks eventually. This was apparently resolved in later models.

It's all well and good in M5 land until the M3 connoisseurs join the thread and declare the M5 an affront to Bauhaus supremacy and the thing that keeps Barnack rolling in his grave. Then you will find your M5 suddenly huge, ungainly, ugly and useless. So I'd stop reading this thread right now and just enjoy your camera. It's a great photographic tool.

Actually I have and love both - also there is an argument that the M5 is the peak of Leica's production quality. 50mm on the M3 and 35mm on the M5 is brilliant combination.
