This photo has got to be the the winner for perfect timing.
This is the sort of thing I could only dream of shooting.

I wonder if the kayaker had to change his shorts.
Is a great bit of timing.

But are you envious of that photo?
It is certainly a great capture, but the picture is strangely undramatic. Maybe it just doesn't speak to me.

I've been the guy in the kayak a few times. Although with Orcas and Grays not hump backs. Once had a Juvenile Orca "spy-hop" and bump my kayak paddle. Definitely exciting when they are that close. The poor whales around the Washington San Juan and BC Gulf Islands are now victims to constant harassment by tour boats. You can always find the whales on the horizon by looking for the crowd of tour boats floating next to them. It's been a huge boom in the last 20 years. When I was in my 20-30's I ran an eco-tour/mothership Kayak/Dive/Fishing charter in the San Juan's.. 6 Poeple max per trip. Back then there were just a few boats running trips and staying well clear of the whales. Now they are countless with some holding 50-100 people doing 2-3 "trips" per day. Co-op owned Spotter planes and constant Cel phone contact. The poor critters never have a moment alone.
I read that this photo will be used to promote whale tourism in SC and surrounding water. Oh well what can you do.
