I think its going to be worth it if you have a well used camera that needs some adjustments and is looking very tired on the outside, because you get back a new looking camera with another years warranty. But if it is just down to wanting a chrome body without the red dot, only you can say if it is worth it.
Hmm..Mine is in Solms right now for its makeover. But it did fit Steve's criteria - well used, in need of an overhaul and just out of guaranty. And I always wanted bright chrome from the start. Having said that, over time I found black coating to be nearly as attractive.
I just spoke to Leica UK - UK upgrade (new screen and top/bottom plates) is €1250. The key point is that the 1 year warranty extension is valid from when the work is done, rather than added to any existing warranty, therefore there is no upside (from a warranty point of view) from an early upgrade - wait until you are nearly "warranty expired" and then get that shiny new set of top and bottom plates! The other point is that if the work is done after the expiry of an existing warranty the 1 year warranty still applies.
I'm strongly considering buying the $500 one-year warranty extension, but not the upgrade. Nothing about the upgrade I have any desire for. With the M8 it was different: more functional (for me) framelines, and a (supposedly) more durable shutter. I'll save my pennies for the M10 or whatever.
Well, I went for it. I was impressed with the 11 day turnaround, door-to-door. I'm already liking the smooth leather and bright screen. Worth the price? I try not to think about it.
