The Nikon 45mm...

I recently bought a silver 45/2.8P that came with just the silver lens cap, but no hood.

Two things I find remarkable: first the focus rotation is only 45 degrees and is very fast to focus; and the contrast is so remarkable that it is noticable in the VF'er.

I find the fast focus and its small size on a F2 with DE-1 eye level prism a great asset for shooting street. The mucho contrast that appears in the VF'er also makes focusing very easy.

Definitely a cool little lens Cal. Love mine.

You can get the later version of the 50/1.8 Series E - it's optically identical to the 50/1.8 AIS (late version). They're both really good performers and the (supposedly poor) build quality of the 50 E lens has been way overblown - mine has traveled quite a few places and it's still as silky smooth as when I bought it.

But the difference in price between the 1.8 AIS pancake and the later E series pancake isn't much...and one is plastic and one is metal...

But damn if I wouldn't get the chrome version of the 45 2.8P just because it looks so damn cool with the F:

Looks great...

Cool lens for sure. I really haven't used it enough—I bought it shortly before becoming rather obsessed with my Pen FT—but I've certainly gotten some pleasing photos from it. The lack of aperture numbers that show in the viewfinder (on the old MF cameras) can be a bit frustrating but I figured out that the first screw for the indexing bracket shows up at f4 so that helps.
