no warrantee card means you get no filter?

i registered my m8 yesterday, and was able to order for free 2 uv/ir filters. everything was fine, i even received confirmation that my order had been processed.

but this morning, i checked my mail, and they are now asking for the barcode on the warrantee. i bought the camera used, a week ago. so i don't have a warrantee card.

i figured that since the m8 wasn't registered, then that m8 needs 2 filters specifically for it. is the reason for warrantee card 'proof of purchase'? and in that case, could i send them the invoice for the camera?

I would try sending the invoice and tell them that you've misplaced the warranty card.

Leica needs to be sure that the unregistered serial number is that of your camera. Did you buy it from a professional dealer? If so, send the invoice but don't lie. You have not the warranty card because your dealer did not give it to you.

Wait, wait, wait. Do I read this right and the free filter offer applies to each new owner of the camera? Or just once per camera body like I assumed? There were no filters included in the deal when I bought my M8 second-hand. I think I have the warranty card and all other papers, though.

I don't think free filters are for the life of the camera just the first registered owner. So if it hasn't been registered at all, and Leica don't already have a name and address for the first owner, you should get the filters. I have never known them to need the warranty card for anything though, just the receipt.

Not that it matters, and purely out of curiousity... so what would your response be when/if they informed you that the camera had been previously registered by somebody else and the filters were sent to the original owmer?

Bought mine used without any documentation. When I registered it online (the previous owner failed to do so) i was asked for my warranty number. I explainend that i don't have one. They then asked for a picture of the camera showing the serial number, to confirm I actually have the camera. I received my filters a couple of days later, no problem.

Yes, of course. You are absolutely correct and right. But many people would be more honest and say something more like, "I bought the camera used and I didn't get the warantee card, so if it hasn't been previously registered I'd like to do that and get the free filters".

Maybe I'm unclear on the difference between "fiangle" and saying something untrue just in case it works.

No no Steve they do ask for the bar code of the warranty card. At least i've had to send a scan of the latter to get the free filters of my s/h M8.2.

TBH I'd probably say I bought the camera used, I don't know where the warranty card is. While I had them on the phone, or via email I would see if I could beg or plead my case for the filters. I've registered my M8. The option for filters did not come up for me. I figure a previous owner already registered and got their filters. I have no plans on contacting Leica to get them to send me filters. Already got one with the camera, and I've purchased 2 B&W ones for my other lenses. Now if Leica had given me the option for filters and then given me grief after ordering them, that's when I would talk to them and try to work something out so I got my free filters. I still don't see a problem in saying that the warranty card is misplaced. It definitely isn't there. And if you noticed I said send the invoice. The invoice is nine times out of ten going to state that you've purchased a used camera. Leica would also notice that (depending on where you bought it) the seller is not a dealer. I'm sorry that I misspoke earlier. Finagle means to me to haggle with. And I certainly don't have any problems haggling.

My understanding is that the filter deal was per camera, not owner. Only makes sense. There was a run on filters last year at Leica when a very similar thread was raised in another forum. No doubt, they likely ended up anywhere but on *thee* camera, if you know what I mean.

In my case, and more specifically Mudman's... When I got my M8 with a missing warranty card, one of the first things I tried to do was register it, regardless of the filter deal as I had already purchased them. Interestingly, It said that the camera had already been registered -and I went no further. I suppose I could have made a call and worked it out -but maybe I missed something that Mudman did not?

Didn't they offer a way to update the registration for current owner? I had a situation recently on a totally different kind of product (water heater) where I needed warrantee service and called the company, only to find out that the contractor who installed it registered under their name to "steal" a rebate. The customer service was apologetic and took care of me but only after changing the registration. I still got screwed out or a rebate that the contractor "finagled". At least for any future warantee needs the registration is current.

Gumby - that's not finagling, that's being dishonest by the contractor. Sorry that happened to you. When I haggle, yes it's for my benefit but I'd never try to screw someone else over.

When I bought my M8 it was the same secondhand but had never been registered I didn't have a warranty card but sent them a photo of the serial number and barcode on the cardboard folder that comes with the manual etc, no problems its nothing to do with if the camera is secondhand its if its been registered before. Got the filters in a few days.

Ya, that guy was a real piece of work. Ends up he did it to a lot of people to keep his profit up. He lost a lot of credibility in our community when that business practice got publicized. I agree with haggling and getting what is deserved -- I do it too.

I've just found that the more accurate the request is stated the more likely people (and companies) are going to be to comply. Sometimes all it takes is one hint of dishonesty (no matter how well-intentioned it may have been) to cause someone to become defensive and uncooperative. Unfortunately that is the work environment I am now in. A colleague (co-located customer) was caught in a lie (white lie, but not totally truthful nonetheless) an dworking with him has been really difficult ever since. That wan't his first nor last "white lie", or as he says "creatively-phrased statement of the truth".

Sorry if I took it out on you, but between the plumber, my colleague, and the numerous telemarketers who call at dinner time, I get a bit tired trying to decipher the truth from anything else.

@Gumby: per above... that is likely. Like I said in my post, I probably could have called and worked it out -but didn't. I really had no reason to as the camera was fine and I already had the filters.

i think i'm a little lost here. the fact that i could register the m8, AND order the filters, pretty much tells me that the m8 was never registered at all, and filters for that specific m8 were never ordered by the previous owner.

but currently, leica just want to confirm that the m8 is indeed mine (i suppose). and that i don't plan to 'take the filters', and then resell the camera. is that right? in that case, i have the invoice i paid for the camera. and i can take photos of the camera, with the serial number on it showing

anything else, then i am not sure what more i can do. i just sent leica a reply email, basically stating what i wrote above.

i'm still confused as to why they are asking for warrantee. does the camera have to be under warrantee for them to send filters? or does the warrantee serve some other purpose?
