Double X and Ilsofol S

thank je! 😛 yeah zeiss has grown up fast. he is going to school soon.. i will have more time to shoot outside. 😉

the cap is really pain in the **s to use.. :bang: i'm trying to search online how to close the tank properly. can you help me? 😀 it took me atleast 10secs just to properly close the tank a while ago 😡

we have this huge, heavy blanket for winter that i used for a changing bag. although i'm worried about the static. hahahah

If you have the recent dished shape cap, just turn it clockwise a few degrees and it will lock (listen for the click) in place, the opposite to take off. Yes, it seems flimsy at first but it is light tight (as you already know) and I think it was designed that way for ease of pouring chemicals in/out. It also uses less chemicals than an equivalent screw type cap tank.

I don't think is your scanner. I ran into trouble while printing. Not only the contrast, but too much grain. Interestingly my Ulrafine Extreme 400, bit overcooked, has less grain and much lower contrast. Taking that this film is HP5+ technology looks like Ilfosol 3 is more compatible with ilford products, than with old technology of DXN. In D76 type of developer DXN works better for me. As soon as I scan my print I will post them.
 
ohh keep us updated.. my scanner is not that good and probably adds up noise to the images.. i'll try to scan this on a proper scanner next time.. so, do you think 6mins developing for doublex using ilfosol S is not good enough?

Hopes are gone. DXN developed 8 min in Ilfosol 3 looks no good. Grain is sharp but sooo big I can feed horse with it. Look of the negative could be deceiving, larger print is not. I am sorry, but my conclusion is, that somehow this two products have little compatibility.
 
I find that Ilfosol is not compatable with very much personally, even ilford films. HP5+ looks flat with large grain and FP4+ is a little better but still flat. I won't be using it any more personally.
 
A couple of years ago, I used a bottle of Ilfosol-3 (well actually not the whole bottle as it went bad before I used it up) and I did not like it at all.

I would sooner use Caffenol than Ilfosol. I'm happy right now with HC-110 and D-76.
 
Most folks seem to be pretty happy with D76 and XX. I mix my own, and I'm happy with it. It's called ADOX Borax MQ, and I use it with a replenisher. Ilford's version is ID-11.

Recently I have used a mixture of HC-110 and Rodinal, and that's very good, too. I've got alot of film to run (still) and that is what I am going to use for a while.
 
That's all is very strange. For me Ilfosol 3 worked not bad with Agfa APX 100, it was more contrasty and grainier than APX in Tmax dev. but not bad. Strange is also the fact, that I have a book about basic darkroom work, but there are presented prints from good photographers and in many cases the neg developer was Ilfosol S. That prompted me to try it again. The bottle is not finished yet, experimentation will go on.

thanks for the help though, i'm quite ok with the result for my developing maybe a 6.5min would be much better at 1+9. it's just the scanner that's why the grains are too annoying. it added noise and look at the blacks on the images. not good. i've checked my old pics scanned with this scanner it's the same. when i have a better scanner i will rescan these negs. acceptable for me 🙂 i will try plus X with ilfosol S soon. hope it would be much better.

i will try to get ID-11 next time. i was in a hurry and very excited when i entered that shop full of darkroom equipments. i didn't able to check around.. another thing is the owner doesn't understand english. i think i've seen ID-11 there, some bottles of tetenal and other ilford products. unfortunately they don't have kodak. 😱

so ID-11 is kodak d76? that would be nice. i might try ilford films soon even it's too expensive here in iran. last time i was there it's like 7000toman (almost $6-7). someone told me it's now
$12-$15 a roll. :bang: if i could only get some chems here i would definetly make my own..

I don't think in Iran you can find many American products and now world and Iran started embargo war. It will be worst.

There is one thing more we can do with Ilfosol 3, but can you get borax ? The regular one for laundry will be fine.
 
Shortening dev time for DXN to 5 min in 20C with very lazy agitation and then after draining the developer leaving the film standing for 3-3.5 min in solution of borax is helping a lot with contrast and grain. Sharpness of 8x10 very good.
