What gear are you hiding?

I have the opposite problem, I have to hide my "gas" from her.
Shes always for letting me buy anything, as long as it makes me happy, who cares if we cant eat for the next month..... 🙄
So I avoid sharing certain things, or she might convince me into buying them... 🙁

My wife's the same way, she doesn't like me to sell anything and she's the first one to say "that looks like an interesting camera, you should get it".
I've learned a long time ago that it's harder to buy back a camera that I've sold than it is to just hold on to it. 😉
 
With all due respect Roger, you're married to a photographer. The rest of us aren't usually so fortunate to have spouses that like photography. My wife tolerated my photography for 30 years now - she even helped me to get my Nikon F3 in 1985. But, her patience gets thin when she sees more and more new gear.

Her: "So what's wrong with the F3?"

Me: "Nothing dear, it's just that I've always wanted to try a rangefinder. After all, your dad has two Leica M3s"

Her: "How much did that Leica M7 and that lens cost you (35 Summicron ASPH in LTM)?"

Reply to that, and I get a long lecture about waste, redundancy, etc for a few hours.

She eventually sees it all - the Super Ikontas, the Contessa, the Polaroid 180, Rolleiflex.

It's just the initial hostility that I'm hoping to avoid.

I recently encouraged her to get a very expensive Chanel handbag. She's always wanted one, and she has been a good sport about my expensive hobby. I can't be the only big spender in the family.
 
"Focus past infinity"...had me laughing. I always tell her about the cameras, though she often has the same reactions.

I tell her often that in the grand scheme of things--that is, what I have paid for and what I have sold over the years--I'm ahead by my (very honest) calculations. At worst, I've broken even. I buy when I get good deals, and sell when I don't use something, or the market values it at more than it's worth.

Best not to start with secrets...

No need to hide anything, thank God. But then again, she does not hide it from me when she buys expensive designer stuff for her 4 story dollhouse 😀 - which by the way is standing next to my camera collection in the living room...
 
Actually, I think that my wife hates me selling stuff more than she dislikes me buying it.

If she discovers that I'm selling a piece of gear, I get grilled on why I bought the thing in the first place, how much did I pay, and how much am I going to lose by selling it.

For that reason, I don't often sell!

That's probably a good thing, because most of the time I regret selling an item.
 
I'd never hide anything from my partner. There's no need, in the first place, and beyond that it would be silly anyway. He doesn't care how I spend my money, as long as I keep up my end of the household obligations.

I buy or hang onto equipment I am not using anyway. The gear is secondary to the photography.

So the only stuff I'm hiding is the stuff I've forgotten I have...

Most of my purchases are cheap. Just got back last week from an annual camera show and only spent $55 total. For that I got a very clean Fujica ST605n body for $25 so I can now use a couple of Super Takumars I've had sitting in a drawer for several years. Also picked up a Sears KS500 w/50mm f2 lens, clean and working for $5 (this camera is a rebadged Ricoh KR5 K-mount SLR). The other stuff was series filters and adapters, a contact printer and other odd bits.

Film over the next year will run more than that.
 
My girlfriend is actually a Leica nut herself, so every time I suggest selling something, like my X1 recently, she tells me how nice that camera will be for concerts we're about to go to. I'll just never manage to sell anything, while at the same time she tells me how nice it would be to add a 35mm summilux to the shelf... :/

Wait till she dumps you ands takes everything on the shelf with her. In the middle of the night, when you least expect it, when you think everything in the relationship is going great.

In the time before i sold all of my canon gear I'd swap the EF-S lenses with L counterparts every so often, my folks would not notice it but my gf did... Had a heck of a time explaining why i need a lens that costs 1/5th of my cars worth and how the hell can an university freshman afford it , needless to say she is now an ex...
Now what I'm hiding ? Hmm a Summicron 35 that will be waiting for me in customs till i get enough money to pay for the import costs 😀 my folks again won't probably notice the difference between it and a Jupiter mounted on one of my Zorkis.
